LOCAL NOTES : Surfing Contest Scheduled Saturday in Huntington Beach

The Professional Longboard Assn. will hold a surfing contest Saturday near the foot of Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach. Top finishers will compete in the U.S. Longboard Championships Oct. 7-8 at Ventura.
Men’s and women’s divisions range from 14-and-under to 50-and-over. For more information call (714) 960-7249.

The women’s only Danskin triathlon series comes to Newport Beach’s Back Bay at 7 a.m. Saturday. More than 750 women are expected to compete in the race, which features a half-mile swim, a 12.4-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile run.
In addition to the individual competition, there is a relay division.
There also will be a health and fitness expo at the Hyatt Newporter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

The NFL Booster Club of Orange County is searching for former Ram players, cheerleaders and employees. They will be honored from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pepper’s in Garden Grove.

Marc Ware has been named coach of the boys’ cross-country team at Magnolia High, according to girls’ Athletic Director Debbi Burlison.
Ware was an assistant last season. The girls’ program will be run by Bill Chavez, a teacher at the school who formerly coached cross-country and track.
