COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL ’95 / Mission Conference : SOUTHWESTERN

Share

1994 RECORDS: 0-9-1 overall, 0-5-1 in the division.

COACH: Mike Pompa (record at Southwestern, 0-0)

RETURNING STARTERS: Four on offense, two on defense.

OUTLOOK: Mike Pompa, in his first season at Southwestern, didn’t attend the recent Mission Conference Central Division media day. Instead he sent this message: “We’re starting over, we’ve got about 100 guys out and they’re mostly new and that’s probably a good thing. We’re starting from scratch.” Pompa takes over for Bill Kinney, who had a record of 14-35-1 in five seasons. Kinney said he was happy to be in the Central Division because it offered his team a chance to play the best competition in Southern California. But last season, Southwestern fell to 0-9-1. The bright spot was a 28-28 tie with Saddleback. Otherwise, Southwestern had some dismal games, including a 66-13 loss to Palomar and a 72-21 drubbing by Rancho Santiago. In the Rancho Santiago loss, the Dons scored four touchdowns in 39 seconds. Southwestern allowed 492 points in 10 games, which was the worst in the 14-team conference. The Apaches also allowed 491 yards a game, again worst in the conference. On the plus side, Southwestern averaged 21 points a game. Quarterback Leon Mayette is back after having a solid year despite having to throw more than 40 times a game. He was 238 of 405 for 2,702 yards. He also had 17 touchdowns passes and 15 interceptions. Alex Gresham is back at tailback after rushing for 844 yards and six touchdowns. Southwestern opens the season with a 1 p.m. game Saturday at Mt. San Jacinto, then plays host to Mt. San Antonio in a 7 p.m. game Sept. 23.
