In only its second school year, Valencia begins its first season of varsity football with a roster of 25 juniors and sophomores--and an independent schedule.

The team’s single-back offense will be built around junior running back Donavan Calhoun (6-1, 170), who last season rushed for 1,391 yards and 17 touchdowns for Valencia’s junior varsity team. “I’ve been in coaching 14 years and he’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever had,” said Valencia Coach Brian Stiman, a longtime assistant at Canyon.

Stiman, 38, is also high on junior quarterback Kenneth Broadus-Taylor (6-1, 160), who played receiver last year and has a strong arm and good speed. Junior offensive tackle Ashton Holbrook (6-3, 235) is another standout.

“I have no expectations as far as wins and losses,” said Stiman, whose 1994 JV team was 5-5. “Our goal is for the kids to learn to play football at a level at which they can be proud.”

Valencia will play all but one of its home games at Canyon. Its schedule includes area schools Burbank, Burroughs, Littlerock and Canoga Park. Next season Valencia joins the Foothill League.
