ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Owens’ Big Night Helps Brea Olinda Beat Buena Park

Senior tailback Jerome Owens rushed for two touchdowns as Brea Olinda beat Buena Park, 20-7, Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Owens rushed for 101 yards in 17 carries to lead the Wildcats, ranked sixth in Division V. Owens scored on a pair of one-yard runs.

Brea’s Matt Kalcevich, starting at quarterback in place of an injured Tom Prenovost, had a shaky night, but connected with Mike Beamer on a seven-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Kalcevich completed six of 21 passes for 58 yards and was intercepted twice.

Buena Park took a 7-0 lead with 5 minutes 58 seconds left in first quarter.

The Coyotes began the drive on their 44 and scored 10 plays later on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Reggie Knight to Arthur Frazier.

But Buena Park was hampered the rest of the night by poor field position and penalties. The Coyotes were penalized 16 times for 122 yards. Thirteen of the penalties came in the first half.

Brea Olinda tied he game with 3:20 left in the first half on Owens’ first touchdown run. The Wildcats took the lead with 1:11 left in the third quarter after a 48-yard, nine-play drive, which Owens capped with his second score.

The Brea Olinda defense controlled the game in the second half, limiting Buena Park to just 23 yards.

Brea Olinda fullback Richard Bravo put on a good rushing performance as well, with 51 yards in eight carries.
