ROUNDUP : Pepperdine Women Sweep to 6th Consecutive Victory

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match Saturday with a 15-10, 17-15, 15-11 defeat of Montana at the Montana tournament.

Nicole Sanderson, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 26 kills and 10 digs for the Waves.

Anne Windes chipped in with 15 kills and 10 digs and Becci Roehl had 65 assists for Pepperdine (6-1). Montana is 4-4.

Northern Arizona d. Cal State Northridge 15-12, 15-4, 15-13--The Matadors lost a nonconference match in Flagstaff, Ariz. The defeat was Northridge’s fifth in a row and its second in two days against Northern Arizona (4-1).

Freshman Carrie Kapfenberg led Northridge (1-8) with 17 kills and six digs while Heather Hofmans had 34 assists and eight digs.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Pepperdine 3, UC Santa Barbara 1--Junior forward Jennifer Evans scored the fourth hat trick of her career as the Waves (1-0-1) beat the Gauchos (0-3) in a nonconference match at Moorpark College.

Evans, from Royal High, scored in the 30th, 53rd, and 62nd minutes. Santa Barbara converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

Cal State Northridge 1, Wyoming 0--Rachel Gagliano scored for the Matadors in the 22nd minute of a nonconference match in Laramie, Wyo.

Kim Kuhn made three saves for Northridge (2-1).

Cal Lutheran 1, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1--Jennifer Tuck scored for the Regals (2-0-1) in the third minute of overtime before Natalie Sur tied the match for Dominguez Hills (2-2-1) in the 113th minute at Cal Lutheran.

The Master’s 3, Cal State L.A. 2--Sarah DeWolf scored twice, including the deciding goal in overtime, as the Mustangs defeated the Golden Eagles at the Whittier tournament.

Cal State L.A. led, 1-0, at halftime before Krissy Trower and DeWolf scored in regulation for the Mustangs (3-1).

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 3--Aluede Okokhere scored twice as the Kingsmen beat the Toros in an overtime, nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.

Okokhere scored in the 42nd and 71st minutes to give Cal Lutheran (1-3) a 2-1 lead. The teams entered overtime tied, 2-2, but Dominguez Hills (1-2) scored in the 99th minute before goals by Matt Romeo and Brian Collins in the 101st and 107th minutes gave Cal Lutheran the victory.

Ryan Kaufman made 10 saves for the Kingsmen.

The Master’s 2, Concordia 1--Stephen Janho’s goal at the 70-minute mark broke a 1-1 tie in the nonconference match at Master’s.

Trailing, 1-0, at halftime, Master’s (4-0) tied the score on Bryan Lee’s goal at the 65-minute mark.

Fresno State 3, Cal State Northridge 0--The Matadors lost to No. 16 Fresno Friday night in a nonconference match at Fresno.

Each team had two players ejected during the physical match, with Juan Sastoque and Danny Nishiyama receiving the red cards for Northridge (1-2).

Fresno’s Bryan Taylor scored in the second minute when he intercepted a pass by the Matadors’ freshman goalie, Zoltan Nagy, in front of the Matador goal.

Nagy finished with six saves while J.J. Wozniak stopped five shots for Fresno.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Calabasas Classic--Westlake defeated Burroughs, 15-13, in a one-game match to win the tournament at Calabasas High. Warrior senior outside hitter Marcy Davis was chosen most valuable player. Calabasas and Village Christian tied for third place.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Morro Bay Invitational--Nordhoff High’s nationally ranked boys’ and girls’ teams both finished first. Mason Moore, Will Dernaldo and Omar Vega finished third, fourth and fifth for the boys. Elaine Canchola won the girls’ race with the second-fastest time ever on the three-mile course at Morro Bay High. Canchola’s time of 21 minutes 28 seconds was nine seconds slower than the record set by former Ranger Karen Bockel.

Crespi 29, Santa Clara 43, St. Anthony 48--Crespi’s Jon-Pierre Lauden and Richie Walker finished first and second in the boys’ race of the Mountain Goat Tri-Meet at La Reina High.

Lauden covered the 2.75-mile course in 15:29 while Walker posted a time of 15:30.

La Reina 18, Santa Clara 67, St. Anthony 79--Freshman Kim Utterson and senior Samantha Conroy led the Regents to victory in the Mountain Goat Tri-Meet at La Reina High.

Utterson finished first in 18:36 while Conroy was second at 18:55. The Regents placed nine runners among the top 10 finishers.

BOYS’ FOOTBALL

St. Joseph 25, Santa Clara 6--The Saints (0-1) managed just 128 offensive yards and failed to capitalize on two first-half turnovers in a nonleague loss to the Knights (1-0) at Channel Islands High.

Santa Clara’s only score came with 1.7 seconds to play when quarterback Adrian Maciel connected with receiver Andy Super from three yards.

L.A. Lutheran def. Liberty Christian, forfeit--The Lions (1-0) were awarded the eight-man victory because their opponent from Garden Grove could not field enough players.

“They had nine players,” L.A. Lutheran Coach Stan Dobler said, “then they had discipline problems at the school.”
