Two new Westside football coaches enjoyed opening-week victories, but some others struggled. . . . St. Bernard beat Culver City, 13-8, which gave Tom Paredes a victory in his first game with the Vikings, but spoiled Steve Carroll’s first game as the Centaurs’ coach. . . . Rico Perez made the other successful opening, leading Inglewood to a 32-3 victory over Morningside. . . . Bishop Montgomery was a 20-7 loser to Mira Costa in Mike Sanders’ first game as coach. . . . Leuzinger was a 21-14 loser to Lynwood in Bobby Greer’s first game as coach. . . . Buddy Kuhn has taken over a North Torrance team that has not won since Nov. 5, 1993, and extended that string with a 19-2 loss to Artesia. . . . Mike Sakuris is the new coach at Carson, which played well in losing, 14-6, to Bishop Amat. . . . Windward School has a new girls’ volleyball coach, Matt Currey, replacing Gail Holmes, who had a baby recently.
