ROUNDUP : Revitalized Mission Remains Red Hot With 6-0 Win

The Mission College men’s soccer team continued its fast start, beating College of the Desert, 6-0, in a nonconference match Thursday in Palm Springs.

The Free Spirit triumphed in 106-degree weather, improving its record to 2-0-1. Mission finished 0-9-2 in 1994.

Forward Israel Cabrera scored three times. Kris Swanson, Ernie Charles and Omar Pasqualato each added a goal. Goaltender Diego Valencia faced only one shot. College of the Desert is 0-1-3.

Cal Lutheran 4, Central Washington 2--Jan Hammervold scored the go-ahead goal 30 seconds into the second, 15-minute overtime in the nonconference match. Alude Okokhere had two goals for the Kingsmen (2-3).

Hawaii Pacific 2, The Master’s 1--Mark Ruhlman scored his second goal of the season on a crossing shot in the 15th minute to give Master’s a 1-0 halftime lead.

But the Warriors got goals from Brad Ventura and Diego Yemel in the second half to win the nonconference match. Hawaii Pacific is 4-0. Master’s is 4-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Fresno State, 15-12, 9-15, 15-12, 6-15, 15-12--The Waves won their seventh consecutive match while toppling the No. 25 Bulldogs, who suffered their first loss.

Ann Windes had 18 kills and Nicole Sanderson 14 for Pepperdine (7-1) in the nonconference match in Malibu. Beccio Roehl had 52 assists. Tricia Tuley had 18 kills for Fresno State (8-1).

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Ventura tournament--Chris Parrish had seven goals and John Argel added five as Ventura (4-1) split a pair of round-robin matches.

Parrish and Argel each scored five times in a 21-9 victory over De Anza. Parrish, Janko Gogolja and Andy Bruininga each scored twice in a 10-9 loss to Grossmont (5-0), the state’s fifth-ranked team.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Newbury Park 21, Oxnard 8--Tim Rhodes scored five goals, all in the first half, and Dan Franklin added four for the Panthers (2-0) in the nonleague match at Newbury Park.

Paul Prins and Matt McGurk each had three goals for the Panthers.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

St. Francis 15, Chaminade 43--Kevin Koeper and Andy VanOrden placed first and second for St. Francis as the Golden Knights swept the first five places in the Mission League meet at Chatsworth Park.

Koeper, third in last year’s Southern Section Division III championships, and VanOrden each timed 19 minutes 20 seconds over the 5,000-meter course for defending league champion St. Francis (3-0, 1-0).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 11, Thousand Oaks 7--The Coyotes’ top three singles players, Kirsten Gross, Deborah Pepkowitz and Shera Wiegler, each swept three sets. Gelyn Lu and Michele Berkeley swept at No. 1 doubles for Thousand Oaks (2-1) in a nonleague match.

Agoura 13, Burbank 5--Michele Fritz, Michelle Hsiang and Jennifer Donahue each swept her singles matches for Agoura (2-1) in a nonleague match.

Oak Park 9, Royal 9 (81-75, Oak Park in games)--Lauren Nogy, Oak Park’s No. 1 singles player, won all three sets by 6-0 scores.

Simi Valley 10, Campbell Hall 8--Simi Valley’s Eugenia Koo and Tina Elias, at No. 1 doubles, recorded the only three-set sweep of the match. Simi Valley is 2-1. Campbell Hall is 1-2.
