Long Beach Jordan picked the wrong week to try to upset Mater Dei.

The Panthers should have played the Monarchs last week, when the Monarchs edged Servite by three points. On Friday, the defending Division I champions ground out a 35-6 victory in front of an estimated 6,000 spectators at Santa Ana Stadium.

Mater Dei fullback Ryon Holland scored three touchdowns, and quarterback Nick Stremick, who completed seven of 11 passes for 93 yards, threw for one score as the Monarchs extended their winning streak to 16 games.

Jordan (1-1) outgained Mater Dei (2-0) in total yards, 256-203. The Monarchs, however, easily controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage.

They carried a 35-0 lead into the fourth quarter before Panther quarterback Ortege Jenkins ran for a touchdown from six yards. Jenkins passed for 94 yards, but was intercepted three times. The Panthers fumbled four times; one was returned by Brian Manibusan 15 yards for a Mater Dei touchdown on the first play of the second half.

“What we needed to wake up to was whenever our defense presents us an opportunity to score we have to come away with some points,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. “We must also learn that we cannot live off the reputations of other [teams]. You have to make your own reputation.”

Jordan came into Friday’s game looking to make a reputation. The Panthers had won or shared three Moore League titles during Mike Ono’s 12 seasons as head coach. But until defeating Crespi last year, Jordan had not won a playoff game since 1938.

“I think the game means more to us than it does to them,” Ono said.

In the first quarter the Monarchs drove 60 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown, with Holland scoring from one yard. The key play was a fourth-and-15 pass from Stremick to David Castleton that was good for 20 yards.

Jordan looked ready to answer on its first possession, especially after a daring fake punt from the Panthers’ 16-yard line netted 24 yards and good field position. But the drive eventually stalled on the Mater Dei 24, and a 42-yard field goal attempt was short.

So the Monarchs got the ball back and went 75 yards on nine plays. Holland scored his second touchdown, also from one yard.

But the clincher came with less than a minute to play in the second quarter. Jordan running back Raheem Elliott fumbled on his 33, and Mater Dei linebacker Rod Fraser picked up the ball, carrying it to the Panther three yard line.

One play later, Stremick completed a three-yard touchdown pass to Fraser, who was playing tight end.
