Golden West trailed in each game but rallied to sweep Cerritos in a nonconference women’s volleyball match Wednesday at Golden West.

The Rustlers won the battle of two of the best teams in the state, 15-12, 16-14, 15-7.

The key to the match was the second game. With Golden West down, 14-11, Cerritos had to serve to win the match but the Rustlers won a side out. Golden West Coach Albert Gasparian inserted freshman Michelle Shear to serve. Golden West won the game with five consecutive points, three of which came on Shear aces.

Golden West, winner of four State titles in five years, fell behind, 6-3, in the final game. But the Rustlers (3-0) scored the next nine points to lead, 12-6, and won going away. Jessica Redding and Ursula Luna each had nine kills for Golden West.

“That was a good win for us,” Gasparian said. “We’ll both be better teams in [the playoffs] in November.”

Cerritos, the 1992 State champion, is 2-1.
