Royal 34, Ventura 25--Christian Broussard rushed for 196 yards in 29 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Highlanders (1-2) to a nonleague victory at Ventura.
Broussard scored on runs of three and 13 yards in the third quarter.
Ventura quarterback Kyle Schommer passed for 221 yards, completing 12 of 29 for one touchdown. He was intercepted twice.
Ventura’s Donell Wickett had six catches for 185 yards and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Schommer early in the fourth quarter to pull the Cougars to within 27-19.
The Cougars (1-2) got to within 27-25 when Schommer scored on a two-yard run midway through the period, but Royal’s defense forced Ventura to turn the ball over on downs at the Cougar one-yard line with a minute left, and Paul Janousek sneaked over for a touchdown on the next play.
