Rio Mesa 48, Santa Clara 28--Senior Bruce Samuel rushed for a career-high 229 yards in 26 carries and two touchdowns to propel the Spartans to their first victory of the season in a nonleague game at Rio Mesa.
Samuel broke loose for a 61-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game and help set the pace for Rio Mesa, which scored on its first four possessions. Samuel also had an 18-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans (1-2) ahead, 41-21, early in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Adrian Maciel and receiver Andy Super provided all the highlights for Santa Clara (1-2). Super caught eight passes for 188 yards, including scoring receptions of 76, 30, 47 and 11 yards. Maciel completed 13 of 26 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns.
Carl Richardson rushed for 80 yards in eight carries and three touchdowns. Nate Haros rushed for 100 yards in nine carries and scored a touchdown.
