Hoover 14, Grant 13--Lancer running back Luis Escamilla was tackled on the six-yard line on a two-point conversion attempt with 1:02 left to preserve the victory for visiting Hoover.

Trailing, 14-7, Grant drove 59 yards in four plays--capped by quarterback Rigo Sanchez’s nine-yard run with 1:06 left. Sanchez, who was eight of 15 for 90 yards, completed passes of 14 and 19 yards during the drive. His screen pass on the two-point conversion came up short when Escamilla was tackled by Jin Hur, Mike Chae and Marko Ibrahim.

Mnaza Sheldon returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to break a 7-7 tie and give Hoover the lead.

The Tornadoes tied the score on the first play of the second quarter on quarterback Welsev Maltez’s four-yard touchdown run. Emre Ozgur, who gained 129 yards in 21 carries, had three carries for 34 yards during the drive.

Lalo Torres’ 34-yard touchdown run capped a five-play, 77-yard drive by Grant on its first possession.

The Lancers appeared to have taken a 13-7 lead in the second quarter, but a 72-yard interception return by Oscar Gutierrez was called back because of an inadvertent whistle.

“I don’t read all the rule books, but I do know that the whistle came long after he had intercepted the ball,” Lancer Coach Bill Foster said. “I don’t like to make excuses for a loss, but let’s just say that [the referees] made a mistake on that play.”

Grant has lost three games by a total of eight points this season.
