ROUNDUP : Oak Park Boys’ Team Captures Cross-Country Meet on Its Own Turf

Morgan Harrelson finished second and Ryan Roberts ran third to lead Oak Park High, the host team, to victory Friday in the inaugural Oak Park-Agoura Invitational boys’ cross-country meet.

Harrelson, a junior, timed 16 minutes 56 seconds over the three-mile course at Oak Canyon Park. Roberts, a senior, clocked 16:58.

The Eagles totaled 36 points to 47 for runner-up Camarillo. Westlake finished third with 79 points, Moorpark was fourth at 84 and Agoura came in fifth with 88.

Sophomore Steve Martin, who was sixth in 17:28, and senior Aaron Feiger, who finished ninth in 17:39, also placed among the top 10 finishers for Oak Park, the No. 3-ranked team in the Southern Section Division IV poll.

Senior Tim Elston of Moorpark won the race with a time of 16:33.

Agoura, paced by Mary Higgins in third place and Meredith Hellman in sixth, won the girls’ meet with 48 points, followed by Moorpark at 53, Camarillo, also with 53, and Westlake at 64.

Moorpark was awarded second ahead of Camarillo because the Musketeers had a faster sixth runner.

Higgins, a senior, timed 20:44 with Hellman, a junior, at 21:17. Junior Sarah Chulack added a ninth-place finish in 22:22 for the Chargers. Junior Jessica Lepisto, the team’s top returning runner, dropped out of the race with heat exhaustion.

Crescenta Valley 24, Newbury Park 34, Burroughs 76--Chris Evans of Crescenta Valley finished first and teammate Chris Simonds followed in second in a nonleague boys’ meet at Crescenta Valley Park.

Evans timed 16:51 over the three-mile course, with Simonds finishing at 17:12 for the Falcons (2-2).

Crescenta Valley 19, Burroughs 53, Newbury Park 76--Tara Gregory made a victorious debut for Crescenta Valley (3-1) in the nonleague girls’ meet at Crescenta Valley Park.

Gregory, a sophomore transfer from Temple City High, was timed in 21:30 over the three-mile course.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego d. CS Northridge, 10-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-9, 15-7--Erin Balderama had 12 kills and 18 digs, but the Matadors fell short in the nonconference match at Northridge.

Although the loss was a school-record 11th in a row for Northridge (1-14), it was encouraging for the Matadors because they pushed an opponent to five games for the first time this season. They had been swept in 10 of their prior 13 losses.

Freshmen Crystal Newquist and Carrie Kapfenberg added 11 and 10 kills for Northridge.

Freshman Holli Hansen played a solid all-around match for the Matadors with nine kills, 10 digs and seven blocks.

Junior setter Heather Hofmans had 40 assists and 14 digs for the Matadors.

LaManda Mounts had 15 kills and 14 digs for the Toreros (6-5).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Portland 3, Pepperdine 0--Senior All-American Shannon MacMillan scored two goals in the first half to lead No. 3-ranked Portland (7-0-1, 2-0-0) in a West Coast Conference match at Pepperdine.

Freshman goalie Sumon Nicole had four saves for Pepperdine (1-3-1, 0-1-0).

Cal Baptist 4, The Master’s 3--Krissy Trower scored two goals and Beth Gammon added a goal and an assist for the Mustangs (4-4) in a nonconference loss at Master’s.

Goalie Kariss Steinert had eight saves for the Mustangs.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 7, Cal Lutheran JV 0--Forwards Kris Swanson and Omar Pasqualato and midfielder Julio Castillo scored two goals each as the Spirit (3-0-1) rolled to a lopsided victory over the Kingsmen (0-2-1) in Sylmar.

Goalkeeper Diego Valencia had seven saves for Mission.

The Spirit, which led, 4-0, at halftime, has scored 17 goals in its first four games after scoring only 10 last season.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Buckley, 15-4, 15-2, 15-2--Senior outside hitter Karen Breshears had 11 kills and nine digs, and the Eagles (5-0) served up 19 aces--six by Julie Siefert--in a nonleague victory at Buckley.

Harvard-Westlake d. Brentwood, 15-2, 15-3, 15-11--Leslie Coben and Christine Bohle each had 11 kills for the Wolverines in a nonleague victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Coben had three digs and Jenni Kristy had 40 assists. Teammate Lindsay McNiel helped on defense with five blocks.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 24, South Pasadena 4--The Wolverines routed the Tigers in a nonleague match at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard, ranked fourth in Division I, had a 12-1 halftime lead en route to its highest scoring output this season.

J.J. Arden, Brett Hool, Rich Rauth, Brian Schumer and Albert Won each scored four goals for the Wolverines.

Atascadero 12, Ventura 4--Tyler Richardson had three goals and goalie Dan Clark made 16 saves for Ventura in a quarterfinal match at the Buena tournament.

In an 11-7 first-round victory over Arroyo Grande, Richardson, Eddie Campbell and Jake Chinn each had three goals for the Cougars.

Crescenta Valley 10, Righetti 8--Joey Bennett and Jason Payne each scored three goals for the Falcons in a quarterfinal match at the Buena tournament.

Bennett and Jon Conrad each had three goals in a 10-5 first-round victory over Malibu.

Agoura 9, Arroyo Grande 1--Jason Smither scored four goals and Noah Cirincione added three for the Chargers in a consolation quarterfinal match at the Buena tournament.

Noah Bockman scored two goals and Aaron Lefitz made 12 saves for Agoura in an 8-4 first-round loss to Atascadero.

Burroughs 12, California 4--Alfonso Tucsay scored 13 goals for the Indians in two games of the Rowland Tournament.

Tucsay, a junior two-meter setter, had eight goals against California in a third round game of pool play.

The Indians (5-2) held a 6-3 halftime lead but goalie Mike Denny allowed only one goal in the second half.

Crespi 15, Santa Fe 2 Rick Bejune scored nine goals for the Celts in two matches of pool play at the Rowland Tournament. Bejune scored five goals in the Celts’ victory over Santa Fe and four more in their 9-6 loss to Montebello.

Peter Driscoll had 23 saves in the two games for the Celts (4-6).
