PREP ROUNDUP : Errors Give Advantage, Victory to Laguna Beach

Sixth-ranked Laguna Beach took advantage of 43 unforced errors by No. 3 Newport Harbor and defeated the Sailors, 15-4, 15-10, 10-15, 15-9, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Carrie Zeller led the Artists (2-2) with 17 kills and Michelle Christ added 16. Melissa Snow led Newport Harbor (1-3) with 17 kills and 10 digs.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Corona del Mar 1--Melissa Wendt had 20 kills for Huntington Beach (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the county, which won, 11-15, 15-4, 15-8, 15-12. Kelly Campbell had 16 kills for Corona del Mar (1-2), ranked fifth in the county.

Edison 3, Irvine 1--Kari Hogancamp had 20 kills and 22 digs for Edison (5-0), which won, 15-11, 12-15, 15-6, 15-10.

Western 3, Troy 1--Celeste Manliguis had 21 kills for Western (5-0), which won, 15-7, 15-11, 12-15, 15-5.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 9, Newport Harbor 9 (Laguna Beach wins on games, 78-73)--Michelle Bray and Lindsay Weiss won key singles sets for the Artists (4-3), ranked sixth in the county. Bray defeated Newport Harbor’s No. 1 player, Vanessa Godbey, 6-0, and Weiss defeated Katie Canright, 6-3, to give Laguna Beach its ninth set.

Fourth-ranked Newport Harbor is 6-2.

Woodbridge 9, Dana Hills 9 (W wins on games, 83-79)--Rachel Gunther defeated Summer Tantee, 7-6, and Ali and Courtney Tenerelli’s sweep at doubles helped second-ranked Woodbridge (8-0) edge third-ranked Dana Hills.

Lara Spica won her three singles sets, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5, for the Dolphins (3-2).

Santa Barbara 11, Corona del Mar 7--Santa Barbara, the sixth-ranked team in Division I, beat second-ranked Corona del Mar. Nina Vaughan swept in singles, 6-0, 6-3, 7-6, for Corona del Mar (5-1), the top-ranked team in Orange County.

Capistrano Valley 9, Estancia 9 (Capistrano Valley won games 85-66)--Ashley Taylor swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, for Capistrano Valley (4-3).

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Villa Park 14, El Modena 4--Faye DeVera swept in singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, for the Spartans (7-0), who are ranked fifth in the county.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 9, Savanna 9 (Brea wins on games, 80-77)--Brandi Chaney and Melanie Orchard swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, for host Brea (4-4, 1-0).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Edison 1, Santiago 0--Cheryl Helm scored the game’s only goal for Edison (6-0).

In Orange League water polo:

Brea Olinda 29, Savanna 5--Taylor Lowe scored eight goals and Brent Reimer scored six goals for Brea Olinda (5-3).

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

Corona del Mar 9, San Clemente 7--Alex Batley and Carter Weir each scored four goals and goalie Billy Messenger had 15 saves for unranked Corona del Mar (2-5). Colin Shaughnessy scored four goals for fourth-ranked San Clemente (4-3).

Laguna Beach 9, Trabuco Hills 7 (OT)--Justin Ostensen scored twice in overtime and finished with five goals for Laguna Beach (5-3), ranked eighth in Division II.

Newport Harbor 10, Tustin 5--Mike Peetz scored four goals and for the Sailors (5-2), ranked second in the county.
