MISSION VIEJO — Greg Garand’s quarterback sneak with two seconds remaining gave Sunny Hills a 20-19 nonleague victory over Mission Viejo Thursday night at Mission Viejo High.
With the Lancers trailing, 19-14, Garand began the game-winning touchdown drive by scrambling 11 yards on fourth and eight from the Sunny Hills 33. He then completed a 34-yard pass to Sean Granillo on third and 17 with 48 seconds left.
The 6-2, 220-pound senior scrambled 10 yards to the Mission Viejo five, and Robert Oliver ran to the one to give the Lancers first and goal.
The Diablos (0-4) had taken a 7-0 lead when Kiki Ikemaya returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and they added to their lead on a 21-yard field goal by Nick Gilliam.
However, Garand connected with Oliver on a 29-yard touchdown pass late in the first half and then engineered a 48-yard drive that was capped by Oliver’s nine-yard run that gave Sunny Hills (1-2-1) a 14-10 lead in the third quarter.
Mission Viejo went back on top with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Greg Carr to Jahmal Gillespie with seven seconds left in the third quarter. Gilliam’s 32-yard field goal gave the Diablos a 19-14 lead with 4:05 left in the game.
Garand completed 18 of 37 passes for 243 yards with two interceptions.
