PREP ROUNDUP : El Toro Downs Second-Ranked Newport Harbor

El Toro, ranked sixth in the county, scored two fourth-quarter goals and defeated second-ranked Newport Harbor, 6-4, in a Sea View League boys’ water polo game Wednesday at El Toro High.

El Toro (10-3, 1-0 in league) led, 3-0, after the first quarter. But Newport Harbor (6-4, 0-1) rallied to tie it, 4-4, in the fourth quarter on a goal by John Jones.

The Chargers answered when Keith Capielo scored with 5 minutes 39 seconds remaining to make it, 5-4. El Toro’s Mark Tilton sealed the victory, scoring his second goal with 2:41 remaining.

“This was huge,” El Toro Coach Don Stoll said. “Newport came into this as the favorite to win the league and to hold them to four goals is a tribute to our defense. I’m very pleased with how everyone played tonight.”

Shane Maag scored two goals for El Toro and goalie Greg Stoll had 14 saves.

Chris Richardson scored two goals for Newport Harbor and goalie Graham Harvey had nine saves.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 18, Canyon 3--Sophomore Kyle Baumgarner scored a season-high eight goals to lead third-ranked Villa Park (15-2, 1-0). Brian Pharris and Joey Pacelli each had three goals.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 14, Cypress 4--Kendall Benson had eight goals for El Dorado (1-0 in league), ranked ninth in Division II.

Katella 13, Kennedy 4--Jeremy Janton scored four goals for host Katella (8-6, 1-0), which led, 9-2, at halftime. Phil Wirthgen and Eric Rex each scored twice for Katella.

Loara 31, Century 4--Mike Timanus scored nine goals for Loara (2-3, 1-0), which set a school-record for goals scored in a game. The Saxons led, 7-1, after one quarter and outscored Century, 12-2, in the second quarter.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 14, Buena Park 3--Dave Ploog scored five goals and Rashad Captan added four for host La Habra (10-10, 1-0).

Troy 9, Fullerton 7 (OT)--Troy’s Ben Couchman and Brian Shepherd scored the two goals in overtime to give the Warriors the victory. Andrew Ruga led Troy (5-3, 1-0) with three goals.

In the Golden West League:

Servite 21, Santa Ana 3--Chris Hamme and Ryan Rafferty each scored four goals for No. 5 Servite (8-5, 1-0) at Tustin High.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 11, Western 10--Magnolia’s Jesse Rothman scored with 1:34 remaining to break a 10-10 tie. Rothman led the Sentinels (8-6, 1-0) with four goals and Chris Geeslin had six for Western (8-3, 0-1).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 12, Los Alamitos 7--Lance Banuk scored six goals for host Marina (11-3, 1-0).

In Freeway League boys’ cross-country:

Sunny Hills 20, Troy 38--Ranen Bhattacharya won the three-mile race at Sunny Hills High in 16:23 for the host Lancers (3-1, 2-0).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 18, Irvine 37--Michael Murray’s time of 16 minutes 10 seconds for Santa Margarita was not only good for a first-place finish, but the time set a course record.

Murray’s time on the Santa Margarita High three-mile course, broke the 1994 mark of 16:13 set by Sharam DeZahd of Newport Harbor. Dan Whittington finished second for the Eagles in 16:30. Santa Margarita is 4-0, 2-0.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 25, Santa Margarita 30--Jessica Corbin set a course record for Irvine (2-0 in league), finishing the three-mile course at Santa Margarita in 18:45.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Edison 12, Foothill 6--Darcy McAndress swept in singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3, for host Edison (5-3), which won eight of nine doubles sets to seal the victory. The Chargers, ranked eighth in the county, played without two of their best players, Nichole Kojima and Kellee Foster. Both are out with the flu, Coach John Nguyen said.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 0--Sara Pollaro and Sara Jameson each had seven kills for host Ocean View (5-0, 1-0), which won, 15-4, 15-8, 16-14. Suzy Packard had 12 kills for Westminster (2-4, 0-1).

Rosary 3, Tustin 1--Yolanda Faes had 13 kills and Ariana Hopkins 21 assists for Rosary (5-2, 1-0), which won its league opener, 15-5, 15-13, 11-15, 15-13.
