ROUNDUP : CSUN Gets a Little Extra From Lou in a 3-3 Tie

Ron Lou scored with two minutes left in the second overtime to give Cal State Northridge a 3-3 tie with San Diego State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference opener at San Diego.

Northridge (4-4-2, 0-0-1 in conference play) held a 2-1 lead late in the match but San Diego State’s Colby Jackson tied the score with a goal in the 87th minute.

San Diego State (5-4-1, 0-0-1) took a 3-2 lead when Dan Tomlin scored in the second overtime. Lou countered two minutes later.

Greg Manucci and Juan Sastoque also scored for Northridge.

The Master’s 1, Westminster 0--Senior midfielder Stephen Janho scored early in the second half for the Mustangs (6-5) in a nonconference match at Park City, Utah.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Western State Conference Meet No. 1--Ramon Serratos of Glendale College pulled away from Eleazar Hernandez of Moorpark in the final mile to win at Kenneth Hahn Park in Baldwin Hills.

Serratos, a sophomore transfer from College of the Canyons, timed 22 minutes 21 seconds over the course that was listed as four miles, but appeared to be longer based on the times. Hernandez, runner-up in last year’s State Division I championships for Camarillo High, was second in 22:27.

Glendale placed five runners among the top seven to total 21 points in the team standings. Bakersfield was second with 78, followed by Santa Barbara City (89), Moorpark (90) and Mission (133).

Eduardo Macias (22:38) and Jose Padilla (22:40) placed third and fourth for Glendale. Jose Arias was sixth in 23:02 and Bryan Ramos ran seventh in 23:12 as the Vaqueros took the first step toward winning their second consecutive WSC title and seventh in nine years.

Friday’s meet counts toward 25% of the conference title.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Dos Pueblos Invitational--Will Bernaldo, Omar Vega and Mason Moore of Nordhoff swept the first three places in the senior race and teammates Victor Ochoa and Dusty Herman went 1-2 in the sophomore competition to power the Rangers to the team title.

Bernaldo, sixth in last year’s State Division III championships, timed 15:57 over the three-mile course with Vega at 15:58 and Moore at 16:10. Ochoa and Herman clocked 16:12 and 16:21 in the sophomore race for the defending state Division III champions.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Dos Pueblos Invitational--Elaine Canchola of Nordhoff won the sophomore race and Terrah Chapin and Bridie Hatch placed second and third in the junior race to help the Rangers to the team title.

Canchola, runner-up in last year’s Foot Locker West regional, timed 17:53 over the three-mile course.

Ventura’s Alyson MacIntosh won the junior race in 19:10, followed by Chapin (19:20) and Hatch (19:36).

Buena’s Stacy Hebert took the senior race in 19:26.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

UCLA 7, Pepperdine 4--Larry Felix’s goal with 1:29 left in the third quarter tied the score, but UCLA scored the final three goals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine, ranked No. 4 in the nation, defeated sixth-ranked UCLA twice this season, but couldn’t hold a 3-2 halftime lead.
