ROUNDUP : Teixeira Keeps Ventura Afloat

Ventura College, the No. 2-ranked men’s water polo team in the state, received some clutch goaltending from Paulo Teixeira in a 10-9 victory Friday over Cuesta in the quarterfinals of the Long Beach City College tournament.

Teixeira made 11 saves for the Pirates (17-4-1). John Archel led Ventura with four goals.

Jeremy Pickles and Andy Bruiniga each added two scores.

In an earlier match, Ventura routed Cypress, 18-7. Bruiniga scored five goals.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Arizona State Invitational--Jamie Whitmore of Cal State Northridge finished 22nd, and teammates Lori Miller and Ellen Muench were 35th and 36th as the Matadors finished seventh in the meet at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.

Whitmore, a sophomore, timed 19 minutes 30 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to lead Northridge to a 211-point total. Miller, a senior, and Muench, a freshman, clocked 19:56 and 19:57.

Arizona, led by individual winner and former Agoura High standout Amy Skieresz (17:18), placed first with 19 points, followed by UC Irvine (62).

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Arizona State Invitational--Freshman Javier Ramirez finished 24th and senior Brian Godsey was 30th as Cal State Northridge placed 11th in the meet at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.

Ramirez timed 26:49 over the five-mile course with Godsey at 27:07. Northridge totaled 270 points.

Arizona placed first with 47 points, followed by Wyoming (52) and Azusa Pacific (91).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 20, Thousand Oaks 3--Chris Richeson led the Highlanders (16-4, 3-0) with five goals, and teammate Kyle Finley had 11 saves to help rout the visiting Lancers in a Marmonte League match.

Patrick Hodgins had two goals for Thousand Oaks.

Agoura 21, Westlake 8--Jason Smither scored nine goals and Aaron Lesitz had 11 saves for host Agoura (7-9, 2-1) in a Marmonte League blowout.

Burroughs 11, Alhambra 5--Greg Paggi scored five goals and Alfonso Tucay added four for the host Indians (13-4, 1-0) in an Almont League opener.

Mike Denny recorded 15 saves for Burroughs.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 1, Moorpark 1--Israel Cabrera’s second-half goal gave Mission (6-0-3, 1-0-1) a tie in a Western State Conference match at Moorpark.

Jamie Surace scored at the 19-minute mark of the first half for Moorpark (4-3-3, 1-0-1).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Harvard-Westlake 10, Marlborough 8--The No. 3 doubles team of junior Lori Markman and sophomore Marissa Kase swept their sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, for Harvard-Westlake (9-1) in a nonleague match at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Utah 4, Cal State Northridge 3--Heather Schou scored two goals for the Matadors in a nonconference match at Utah.

Northridge took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rachel Gagliano.

The Matadors held a 3-2 lead in the second half, but goals by Tara McNeil in the 64th minute and Kathy Bullock in the 68th lifted the host Utes.
