ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : SOUTH COAST LEAGUE : Dana Hills Puts Up a Second Victory

Share

Dana Hills, a team that had gone 19 consecutive games without a victory until a month ago, is not likely to finish in the South Coast League cellar this season.

The Dolphins scored the first two times they had the ball and held Mission Viejo to one yard total offense in the first half en route to 27-0 victory Friday before a Diablos’ homecoming crowd of 1,000 at Mission Viejo High.

The victory raised both the Dolphins’ record to 2-5 overall (both wins were shutouts) and 1-1 in league, and the expectation level of enthused Dolphin Coach Trace Deneke.

“If we win three of the next four, we’ve got a chance [for the playoffs],” said Deneke, who was doused with a cooler of ice water after the game. “We’ve got a tough road ahead of us, but it all had to start tonight.”

Mission Viejo (0-7, 0-2) struggled behind sophomore quarterback Jeff Brooks, making his first start in place of the injured Greg Carr, who will be out at least another week with a fractured foot. Brooks threw for 79 yards, but was sacked five times for minus-33 yards and had two passes intercepted.

Brooks’ second pass was picked off by Aaron Shook, who returned the ball 18 yards to the Diablo 18. On the next play, Julio Peraza scored for a 7-0 Dolphin lead.

Peraza also took a shovel pass from John Morgan and raced 14 yards for a touchdown and threw to Chris Weber for a 33-yard touchdown in the third. He ran the ball 10 times for 101 yards.

Dana Hills finished with 310 total yards, Mission Viejo 91.
