Gabe Crecion caught two touchdown passes and Jason Giovannettone ran for a pair of scores as Chaminade High steamrolled St. Francis, 42-0, in a Mission League game Friday.

The Eagles (9-0, 4-0 in league play) built a 35-0 halftime lead before removing the majority of their first-string offensive players and tacking on another score.

“We opened things up with the pass and came back to the run and both worked,” said Giovannettone, who finished with 85 yards in 11 carries.

The Eagles began their domination with a defensive play early in the first quarter when Jason Zdenek intercepted a pass by John Carnevali at the Golden Knights’ 40.

It took Chaminade only four plays to open the scoring, as Zdenek, playing quarterback, weaved his way into the end zone on a 22-yard run.

St. Francis (6-3, 1-3) turned over the ball on its next play from scrimmage when Darin Maxwell fumbled and Carlos Duarte recovered at the Golden Knights’ 38.

The Eagles used four plays to increase their lead to 14-0 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter when Crecion caught a seven-yard pass from Zdenek.

St. Francis was able to run nine plays on its next possession before punting and pinning Chaminade at its one.

However, the Eagles covered the 99 yards in only four plays, scoring on a 61-yard pass from Zdenek to Crecion, who had drifted behind the Golden Knights secondary.

Chaminade led, 35-0, at the half after Giovannettone scored on runs of three and 24 yards. His first capped a six-play, 56-yard drive and his second ended a five-play, 32-yard march.

Chaminade’s second-half score came midway through the fourth quarter on a seven-yard run by backup tailback Scot Davis.
