Glendale States Case for Title
Eduardo Macias finished 10th, Ramon Serratos was 11th and Jose Padilla ran 12th to lead Glendale College to the men’s title in the State junior college cross-country championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.
It was the Vaqueros’ first title since 1980, when a squad led by Jeff Nelson won the small schools division. The State championships had large and small schools divisions until they were consolidated into one race in 1984.
Glendale totaled 89 points, followed by El Camino with 116 and defending champion Riverside at 141.
Macias timed 20 minutes 43 seconds over the four-mile course, with Serratos at 20:44 and Padilla at 20:49.
Moorpark’s Eleazar Hernandez finished second in 20:19--four seconds behind Riverside’s Bashir Hussain--after he took a wrong turn on the course because of a race official’s error.
Josefina Sanchez of Ventura placed 10th in the women’s 5,000-meter race, and Moorpark finished fifth in the team standings.
