Dearborn Resigns as Moorpark Coach

Citing a desire to concentrate on his teaching duties and spend more time with his family, Rob Dearborn has resigned as Moorpark High’s football coach.

Dearborn, 31, who guided Moorpark to a 26-9-1 record and two Frontier League titles in the past three years, submitted his resignation Monday and informed his team the same night.

“I feel I’ve done all I could with the program and achieved many of the goals I set for myself,” said Dearborn, whose record over eight seasons was 41-44-1. “I probably would have [resigned] last year but our principal had just stepped down and I didn’t feel the timing was right.”

Dearborn said additional teaching responsibilities he has accepted, plus a desire to spend more time with his wife and three children, were factors in his decision. Nonetheless, he found it difficult to break the news to his team.

“That was the hardest part of the decision,” Dearborn said. “The seniors thought it was great that I was going out with them, but the others were really disappointed. There are always kids you connect with, and you do feel like you’re letting them down.”

Dearborn said he has recommended that Ron Wilford, Moorpark’s defensive coordinator the past four seasons, succeed him.

Dearborn said he plans to complete his master’s degree in administration at Cal Lutheran. He also said he might remain with the Moorpark football program as an assistant.
