HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Reaches Final Behind Cooper’s 39 Points

Tawnee Cooper scored 39 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Simi Valley High girls’ team to a 61-53 victory Friday night over Bishop Amat to reach the final of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Jamie Griffin added 10 points for the Pioneers (3-0), who scored the first 16 points of the game.

El Camino Real 68, Poly 44--Tami Jones scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 10 steals as the Conquistadores (1-0) routed the visiting Parrots (0-3) in a nonleague game.

Guard Aja Diamond added 14 points and 13 assists for El Camino Real.

Monroe 56, Cleveland 31--Mirna Martinez and Maria Montes each scored 19 points for the Vikings (1-0) in a nonleague game at Monroe.

Martinez added 11 rebounds for Monroe, which played its first home game since its gym was destroyed in the Northridge earthquake.

Notre Dame 48, Carpinteria 31--Ashly Ritter scored 13 points and Lourdes Slinsky added six points and 10 rebounds to put the Knights (3-0) into the championship of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

BOYS

Crescenta Valley 80, Burroughs 63--Forward Nathan Sinning led all scorers with 28 points to lead the Falcons in the championship game of the Burbank-Hoover tournament. Sinning, who was named tournament most valuable player, made nine of 14 shots, including four of six from three-point range.

Center Mike Greco added 19 points for Crescenta Valley (3-0), which built a 52-24 halftime lead.

Guard George Sotomayor scored 26 points for Burroughs (2-1).

St. Francis 51, Belmont 50--Anton Cunningham scored 24 points and Anthony Johnson scored 15 points and added 13 rebounds as the Golden Knights (1-2) won the seventh-place game of the Burbank-Hoover tournament.

Calabasas 83, Chapel Christian 22--Senior swingman Gavin Citron scored 17 points to lead five Coyote players in double figures in the semifinals of the Calvary Chapel tournament in Downey. Junior guard Ryan Coleman added 16 points and seven assists for Calabasas (3-0).

Victor Valley 89, Highland 71--Trevor Beil scored 26 points and Dash Sylvester added 21 as the Jackrabbits (2-0) won a Saugus tournament semifinal. John Burrell scored 33 for the Bulldogs (1-2), one night after setting a tournament record with 44 points.

Bell-Jeff 70, Ridgeview (Bakersfield) 49--Sophomore guard Ruben Douglas scored 21 points and sophomore center Elihu Cobb had 19 points and 10 rebounds to power the Guards (2-0) in the semifinals of the Morro Bay tournament. Bell-Jeff plays Morro Bay in the final at 2:30 p.m. today.

Crespi 54, Lemoore 47--Conor O’Neal had 12 points and six assists as the Celts (1-1) defeated Lemoore (0-2) in the consolation semifinal of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Ron Quarterman added 10 points for Crespi. Lemoore’s Ryan Fox had 20 points.

Antelope Valley 70, Canoga Park 55--Ziare Williams and Le’Tre Kelly each hit for 20 points to put the Antelopes (3-0), who are the defending champions, into the championship round in the Saugus tournament.

Anthony Ellison scored 17 points for Canoga Park (1-1).

L.A. Baptist 85, Bishop Diego 61--With the score tied, 28-28, with three minutes left in the first half, the Knights (1-0) used an 18-2 run to pull away in a nonleague game at Bishop Diego.

Jermaine Sweet scored 21 points off the bench, 19 of those in the second and third quarters. Aaron Davis added 16 points and Ara Veeney had 15 assists.

Valencia 94, Vasquez 29--Jason Richardson had 22 points for the Vikings (2-1) in their home opener. Wes Henderson added 15 points for Valencia and Kevin Woods had 14 points.

Cleveland 77, Poly 55--Donald Holt hit 23 points and James Brignac had 21 points for the Cavaliers (2-0) in a nonleague game at Poly.

Eric Owens scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Poly (0-2).

Birmingham 50, Grant 45--Ellis Richardson scored five of his 17 points in overtime for the Braves (2-0) in a nonleague game at Birmingham. Ronald Patterson scored 15 points for the Lancers (0-2).
