Sylmar Assistant Seeks Burbank Football Job

Darrell McIntyre, Sylmar High’s defensive coordinator, said Saturday he has applied to be head coach at Burbank High.

McIntyre, 31, who has been Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman’s assistant for nine years, is seeking the position vacated last month by John Hazelton.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to explore things for myself,” said McIntyre, who is working toward a teaching credential.

McIntyre, a Kennedy High graduate who played for Cal State Northridge from 1983-86, has received Engilman’s blessing.

“I’m going to write him a helluva recommendation,” said Engilman, who could lose the architect of a defense that allowed 187.9 yards a game this season.

“It would hurt any time you lose a guy that’s a big part of your program. But I tell all my [assistants], ‘If you think you’re ready, go for it.’ ”

With McIntyre considering a job change, Engilman is doing the same. For the past three seasons, he has talked about retiring.

“I haven’t made a decision and I’m not going to right now,” he said.

Engilman has won two City Section titles in nine seasons at Sylmar.
