PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Rally Gives Newport Harbor Title

Down by 10 points with four minutes left to play in the game, Newport Harbor scored 19 consecutive points to defeat University, 49-40, in the championship game of the South Coast Holiday girls’ basketball tournament Saturday at University.

Andree Verhulst, who finished with 15 points, scored nine of those 19 points.

University had a 36-30 lead going into the fourth quarter and quickly increased the lead by four while holding the Sailors (4-0) scoreless.

But M.E. Clayton, who scored 13 points, and Verhulst led Newport Harbor’s 19-point comeback.

In another South Coast tournament game:

Capistrano Valley 45, Thousand Oaks 38--Natasha Combs scored 17 points to lead Capistrano Valley (3-1) in the third-place game.

In the Ladycat Classic girls’ tournament:

Brea Olinda 62, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 52--Brea Olinda (7-1) took a seven-point lead into halftime and held off Bishop Montgomery for the championship. Stephanie Wettlin scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jennifer Saari had 14 points and six assists for the Ladycats.

In the Longview Shootout girls’ tournament:

Mater Dei 62, Carver (Ala.) 59 (OT)--Ronnie Gondringer had 18 points and Margaret Hollis added 16 for Mater Dei (2-1) in a championship bracket game.

In the Bolsa Grande girls’ tournament:

Laguna Hills 56, Santa Ana Valley 28--Tayiba Haneef had 22 points and 15 rebounds for Laguna Hills (4-0).

In the Cypress girls’ tournament:

Costa Mesa 69, Beverly Hills 33--Koo Kim had five three-pointers and scored 22 points to lead Costa Mesa. Cari House and Julie Collett each had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (3-4).

Marina 92, Katella 38--Sonya Bryant tied a Marina school record with 36 points. Bryant also had 11 rebounds and six steals for Marina (6-0).

In the Century Shootout boys’ tournament:

San Diego Mt. Carmel 64, Century 57--Gabriel Aguirre scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Century (4-2) in the championship game.

Fullerton 75, Magnolia 66--Seth LaTour scored 15 points as Fullerton (5-4) finished third in the tournament.

In the Christian Schools boys’ tournament:

Heritage Christian 63, Temecula Linfield 40--Jared Zielinski scored 25 points for Heritage Christian (5-4) in the championship game.

In the Costa Mesa boys’ tournament:

Mission Viejo 63, Santiago 37--Commander King scored 15 points and had 10 assists to lead Mission Viejo to the championship. Teammate and tournament MVP Gabriel Burt had 17 points for the Diablos (8-0).

In the El Segundo boy’s tournament:

Canyon 66, Lawndale Leuzinger 48--William Byrd scored 21 points for Canyon, which finished third in the tournament. Byrd was named to the all-tournament team.

In the Glendora boys’ tournament:

Brea Olinda 71, Glendora 56--John Heredia and Sean Wink each scored 14 points to lead Brea Olinda (7-1) to the championship.

In the Trabuco Hills boys’ tournament:

Santa Ana Valley 85, Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 66--Ike Harmon scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Olujimi Mann had 19 points and nine assists for Santa Ana Valley (2-3), in the ninth-place game.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Woodbridge 56, Orange 50--Chris Burgess scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as Woodbridge (5-2) came from behind to beat Orange. Holman Paz had 14 points and seven assists for the Panthers (3-2).
