Running back Mike Vanis came up short in his bid to become the third member of his family to win a Southern Section title at Loyola. The Cubs lost to Bishop Amat, 14-10, in the Division I final last Saturday. Vanis’ father, Richard, was a blocking back on the championship teams in 1962 and ‘63, and older brother Matt was the team’s leading rusher in 1990 when Loyola defeated Quartz Hill for the Division I title. . . . The All-City Section football teams were selected earlier this week and will be announced next Wednesday. . . . The Fremont boys’ basketball team, rated No. 1 in the preseason by The Times, is one of 15 local schools that will compete in the Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic next week. The tournament features 54 of the top teams in the nation and concludes with the championship game Thursday at Durango High. Manual Arts, Westchester and St. John Bosco will also compete. . . . St. John Bosco defeated national power St. John’s Prospect Hall of Frederick, Md., 54-52, in a tournament at UC Irvine. Bosco was led by junior forward Schea Cotton, who had 15 points and nine rebounds. . . . The Cerritos Valley Christian girls’ basketball team, which has won the Southern Section Division 4-A title four times in a row, is led by transfer Kiyoko Miller, a former Brea guard who is averaging 20 points. Miller, a 5-foot-9 senior, was an All-Orange County player as a junior. . . . Goalkeeper Jeff Taylor had eight saves for St. John Bosco in a 2-0 soccer victory over Crespi.
