PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Sixth-Ranked Mater Dei Beats Sailors

Tony Micheletti scored the winning goal midway through the second half as sixth-ranked Mater Dei defeated Newport Harbor, 2-1, in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Friday at Newport Harbor High.

Richard Jensen scored Mater Dei’s first goal in the first half. The Monarchs are undefeated at 4-0.

Garret Jansmy, on an assist by Justin Kerr, scored for Newport Harbor (5-2) in the first half.

In other nonleague boys’ soccer:

Century 2, Los Amigos 1--Alex Alfaro scored early in the second half to lead Century (3-2).

Corona del Mar 2, Huntington Beach 0--Leo Balanciano and Josh Weinstein scored second-half goals and goalkeeper Ken Brown had five saves for Corona del Mar (3-3-2).

Cypress 4, Hacienda Heights Los Altos 0--Ike Hicks scored twice and Miguel Flores and Jose Escorsia each had one for Cypress (3-2-1).

El Toro 4, Mission Viejo 2--Matt Stein had a goal and two assists for visiting El Toro (7-1-2).

Esperanza 1, Canyon 0--Mark Rodick scored the game’s only goal on a header in the first half for third-ranked Esperanza (8-1-1).

Marina 1, Ocean View 0--Marina took the lead early in the first half when Ocean View scored an own-goal.

Orange Lutheran 7, Cerritos Whitney 0--Goalkeeper Chad Griswold, with eight saves, recorded his fourth shutout of the season for host Orange Lutheran (6-1-2). Matt Stiles had four goals for Orange Lutheran.

Trabuco Hills 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Scott Martino, Samuel Martinez and Nick Henk scored and goalkeeper Todd Abdalla stopped four shots for Trabuco Hills (1-3-2).

Woodbridge 1, Fountain Valley 0--Yigal Kerszenbaum scored for eighth-ranked Woodbridge (7-1-1) five minutes into the first half.

Jason Ruggerello had 10 saves for the Warriors and Jason Owens had four saves for No. 9 Fountain Valley (4-2).

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Fullerton 3, Katella 3 (Fullerton wins in penalty kicks, 3-1)--Joe Schumacher’s save during the shootout gave Fullerton the advantage as the Indians (2-4) went on to win a consolation game. Schumacher had seven saves in regulation.

John Vargas scored two goals for Katella (2-5-2).
