Pilgrim running back Josh Stroud was selected the player of the year on the All-Southern Section eight-man Large Division team. . . . The Cerritos Valley Christian football team made the most of its second chance at the playoffs by defeating Orange Lutheran, 21-17, in the Southern Section Division X title game Saturday. Valley Christian was eliminated in the semifinals by Rosamond on Dec. 1, but Rosamond was removed from the playoffs the next week after it was learned its coaches altered videotape of previous games. It was the second title for Valley Christian Coach Mike Wunderley, who is in his 23rd year at the school. . . . While many of the top boys’ basketball teams in the area are participating in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic this week, Compton Dominguez is in Fort Myers, Fla., for the City of Palms Classic. One of the Dons’ top players is sophomore forward Tayshaun Prince, whose older brother Tommy led the school to a divisional title last season. . . . The Crenshaw girls’ basketball team is favored to win the City Section Division 4-A title for the fourth year in a row. The Cougars have two starters back from last season’s team, including 6-foot junior forward Naila Moseley, who was voted to the All-Section team.
