BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Late Free Throws Give University Victory

Ryan Schachter hit three free-throws with two seconds left in the game to give University a 65-62 victory over host Orange in nonleague boys’ basketball Friday.

With the score tied, 62-62, Schachter was fouled behind the three-point line and sank all three free throws to finish with seven points. Eric Palmer led University with 19 points. Mahdi Aslampour added 13 and Matt Scoggin scored 11.

Juan Dotson led Orange (4-4) with 16 and Steve Lein had 15.

In other nonleague boys’ basketball:

Cypress 51, Pacifica 38--Eighth-ranked Cypress took an early lead and held on the entire game. Matt Shelton, who had five three-pointers, had a game-high 15 points. Cypress improved to 8-2.

Edison 56, Irvine 51--Down by 10 at the half, Edison (6-4) outscored Irvine, 20-5, in the fourth quarter for the victory. Chris Gibson scored 15 points and Dimitri Karnezis had 12 for the Chargers.

Loara 58, Magnolia 54--Loara overcame an early eight-point deficit by outscoring Magnolia by seven points in the second quarter and six in the third. Neil Thomas had 22 points and six assists and Obaid Popal added 16 points for the Saxons (7-4).

Mission Viejo 65, Canyon 46--Gabriel Burt scored 20 points to lead sixth-ranked Mission Viejo (11-0). Guard Commander King, with 12 points, had eight assists and Shaun Murphy had 11 rebounds for the Diablos.

San Clemente 80, Westminster 74--Semaj Johnson scored 27 points, had 10 rebounds and six assists to lead San Clemente (7-4). Eli Engle and Adam Fischer each had 15 points.

Brandon Fox hit seven three-pointers and scored 25 first-half points for Westminster (3-9) before San Clemente sent in Rick Saul on defense in the second half. Saul held Fox to five points in the third and scoreless in the fourth. Scott Yoshizaki added 22 for the Lions.
