It’s No Shootout, but Buena Girls Still Gun Down Pesky Oxnard

Kori Sebek scored 17 points and Stephanie Kinnear added 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the Buena High girls had their hands full with Oxnard before defeating the Yellowjackets, 55-42, in a Channel League game Thursday night.

A foul-plagued Nicole Greathouse added eight points and 11 rebounds for Buena (10-0, 2-0 in league play), which shot 36.8% (21 of 57) from the field.

“We didn’t have a real good shooting night,” Buena Coach Joe Vaughan said.

Neither did Oxnard (7-5, 1-1), which made only 16 of 57 shots (28.1%).

“We ran them off the floor but we just couldn’t make any shots,” Oxnard assistant Richard Arias said.

Danielle Curtis had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Yellowjackets and Nicole Black added 11.

Rio Mesa 63, Dos Pueblos 31--Chante Guggia had 22 points and Trina Ayala added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (8-4, 1-1) in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

Ventura 57, Hueneme 41--Nicole Campbell scored 24 points and Rhiannon Potkey had 14 for the host Cougars (5-6, 1-1) in a Channel League game. Tobi Blair scored 11 for the Vikings (8-3, 1-1).

Palmdale 79, Highland 32--Edniesha Curry scored 22 points for the visiting Falcons in a Golden League opener.

Casey Bledsoe and Kristi Rose each added 14 points for Palmdale (14-2, 1-0).

Burroughs Ridgecrest 52, Littlerock 45--Raushanah Booker scored 15 points and Kristin Phillips added 13 for the host Lobos (4-8, 0-1) in a Golden League opener.

Littlerock made eight of 25 free throws and committed 32 turnovers.

Bell-Jeff 78, Cantwell Sacred Heart 36--Linda Samayoa had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals for the visiting Guards in a Camino Real League opener at Sacred Heart.

Carolyn Nielson added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (14-2), which won its fourth consecutive game.

Thousand Oaks 76, Royal 35--Jenn Detmer scored 18 points and Nicole Woodruff added 15 for the Lancers (13-4, 4-0) in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Irene Reyes had nine rebounds for Royal (8-7, 2-2)

Simi Valley 81, Agoura 36--Tawnee Cooper had 30 points, 17 rebounds and six assists in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Jamie Griffin added 20 points for the Pioneers (14-2, 3-1), who led Agoura (4-8, 2-2) at halftime, 51-19.

Newbury Park 64, Camarillo 37--Amy Berman scored nine of her 18 points in the first quarter as the Panthers (7-7, 2-2) built an early double-digit lead in a Marmonte League game.

Melissa Shoden scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter for Newbury Park. Shoden finished with 14 rebounds.

Cornerstone Christian 52, La Reina 32--Karen Breshears had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles (5-1) in a nonleague game at home.

Julie Siefert added 15 points for Cornerstone, which took a 29-9 halftime lead after holding La Reina (3-6) to one point in the second quarter.

Paraclete 62, St. Bonaventure 41--Junior center Kim Whisler scored 30 points for the Spirits in a nonleague game at St. Bonaventure.

Moorpark 67, Oak Park 26--The Musketeers’ reserves played most of the second half, but still outscored visiting Oak Park (4-10), 24-6, in the fourth quarter of a nonleague game.

Tracey Milburn scored 18 points for Moorpark (11-0).

BOYS

Montclair Prep 72, Kilpatrick 56--Anwawn Jones scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds for the host Mounties in a nonleague game. Scott Stark scored 13 points and had nine assists, and Darin Brock added 15 points.

MEN

The Master’s 99, Arizona Bible 39--Reserve Tim Gaydos had 17 points, and five of his teammates scored in double figures as the Mustangs (12-3) rolled to their seventh consecutive victory in a nonconference game at home.

Mike Penberthy had 13 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Moorpark 78, College of the Canyons 73--Wendell Nunnery had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders (7-11) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game.

Harry Marks had 27 points and six three-point baskets for Canyons (6-12).

WOMEN

Ventura 71, Valley 55--Adrian Sneed scored 18 points and the top-ranked Pirates remained unbeaten despite a sluggish first half in a Western State Conference interdivisional game. Tori Anderson added 13 points for the Pirates (16-0, 2-0).

Canyons 100, Moorpark 49--Maxine Unverferth had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (10-8) in a WSC interdivisional game. Stephanie Labor added 17 points and 14 assists, and Kerri Garland had 16 points and 20 rebounds.

Trisha Palmquist scored 19 points for the Raiders (6-7).

Santa Clara 84, CS Northridge 64--Maureen Batiste had 17 points and Sarah Hagman added 15, but two other Northridge starters failed to score in a nonconference game at home.

Carrie Dormire added 10 points for the Matadors (2-11).
