Feterik Commits to Brigham Young

Los Alamitos quarterback Kevin Feterik has made an oral commitment to play at Brigham Young, his mother, Terri, said Wednesday.

Feterik, a 6-foot-2, 192-pound senior also will play baseball at BYU, his mother said.

Feterik, a two-time all-county selection, passed for 6,222 yards in his career, making him one of only six quarterbacks in county history to have thrown for more than 6,000 yards. He threw for 3,226 yards this season and led the Griffins (11-2) into the Southern Section Division I semifinals, where they lost to Los Angeles Loyola, 37-34.

Kirk Bates has resigned as baseball coach at Newport Harbor, Athletic Director Eric Tweit said.

Bates, who played at Cal State Fullerton and is a graduate of Newport Harbor, had a 18-54-1 record during his five years.

The school is accepting applications before Jan. 19.

Esperanza linebacker Brian Bachhuber has orally committed to attend Utah, his parents said.

Bachhuber, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound all-county selection, had 104 tackles and returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown. He also considered Nevada Las Vegas, Colorado State and Villanova.
