Rio Mesa’s Bautista Puts Hammerlock on Tournament Championship

Jesse Bautista of Rio Mesa High defeated Henry Saga of Alhambra, 9-2, on Saturday to win the 135-pound championship of the Chaffey tournament.

Bautista (28-2), sixth in the state last season as a sophomore, was selected the tournament’s outstanding wrestler among lower weights after going three matches without a defeat, including pins against wrestlers from Workman and Etiwanda.

Bautista, defending Channel League champion, is ranked fourth in the state by California Wrestler magazine.

Heavyweight Paul Alamanza and Ramon Rodriguez, at 140 pounds, of Rio Mesa each placed third. Rio Mesa placed eighth among 15 teams.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Harvard-Westlake 75, Notre Dame 49--Jason Collins had 19 points and 12 rebounds and twin Jarron added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Wolverines posted their ninth consecutive victory in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Jason Collins made seven of nine shots.

Harvard (18-2, 8-0 in league play) outrebounded the Knights (12-11, 4-4), 43-23.

Alemany 60, St. Francis 57--Mario Thompson scored 17 points and had six assists for the Indians (11-11, 4-4) in a Mission league game.

Adrian Pantoja added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Indians.

Avalon 68, Buckley 60--Alex Ong scored 27 points for Buckley, but it wasn’t enough as the Griffins dropped a Liberty League game.

George Wrighster added 14 points and 14 rebounds for Buckley.

Campbell Hall 59, Flintridge Prep 35--Mike Appel had 13 points for the Vikings (12-9, 5-1) in a nonleague game at Campbell Hall.

Chris Bowns scored 15 points for Flintridge Prep (8-8, 3-2).

Chaminade 66, Loyola 60--Mark Delfin had 16 points and 11 assists for the Eagles (11-11, 5-3) in a Mission League game at Chaminade.

Brett Brownson added 15 points for Chaminade.

Oji Singletary scored 12 points for Loyola.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Buena 80, Hueneme 30--Eboni Conley scored 27 points and Kori Sebek added 21 for the Bulldogs (19-0, 10-0) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Cornerstone Christian 50, Thacher 32--Julie Siefert scored 14 points for Cornerstone (12-1, 5-0) in a Condor League game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 2, Alemany 1--Eduardo Chenu and Pete Vagenas scored for the Golden Knights (17-3, 7-2) in a Mission League match at Alemany.

Pat Lufrano scored for Alemany (10-10-1, 4-4).

Notre Dame 1, Harvard-Westlake 0--Mike Bergin scored for the Knights (6-6-1, 4-4-1) in a Mission League match at Notre Dame.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Harvard-Westlake 4, Notre Dame 1--Lizzie Fisher scored twice for the Wolverines (16-3-1, 5-0-1), who remained in first place in the Mission League.

Sarah Morgan scored her 20th goal for Notre Dame (8-8-2, 2-3-2). It was the Knights’ only shot of the match.

Notre Dame goalkeeper Karen Klemic made 15 saves.

Alemany 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Christine Dattilo and Vicki Howard scored for the Indians (9-14, 2-4) in a Mission League match at Flintridge Sacred Heart (10-11-2, 1-5-2).

Adrianna Salazar had nine saves.
