Valley Ends Canyons’ WSC Streak

The Valley College women’s basketball team snapped Canyons’ 23-game Western State Conference South Division winning streak with an 80-66 victory Saturday night at Valley to clinch first place.

Jacque Tennies had 27 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for Valley (19-9, 4-0 in division play). Valery Brady added 17 points and six assists.

Maxine Unverferth and Kerri Garland each had 17 points for Canyons (15-10, 3-1). The loss was the Cougars’ first in conference play in more than two years.

Ventura 98, Moorpark 50--Adria Sneed scored 19 points and Tori Anderson added 15 for the Pirates (24-0, 10-0), ranked first in the state, in a WSC North Division game.

The Master’s 72, Dominican 57--Kim DeVries scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds for Master’s in a nonconference game.

Southern Utah 71, CS Northridge 39--The visiting Matadors (3-16, 1-1) shot a season-low 27% and went scoreless for more than six minutes in the second half of an American West Conference game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 96, La Sierra 53--James Mosley scored 18 points and Mike Penberthy added 15 in a nonconference game as the host Mustangs (18-4) posted their 13th victory in 14 games.

Cal Lutheran 81, Occidental 69--Mark Heerema had 16 points and Jon Rider added 14 points and five assists as the Kingsmen (13-4, 5-1) posted their fifth consecutive victory in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Dave Ulloa added 13 points, six assists and three steals for the Kingsmen.

Valley 66, Canyons 58--Quinton McCowen scored 16 points and Vernon Simmons added 14 for the Monarchs (18-8, 3-1) in a WSC South Division game at Valley. Kayheed Murray scored 14 points for Canyons.

BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge 11, Cal State L.A. 0--Adam Kennedy went four for four with two runs batted in for the Matadors (2-0) in a nonconference game at Northridge. Jose Miranda had two hits, including a home run.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. UC San Diego, 15-8, 15-5, 15-1--Collin Smith had 23 kills for the host Matadors (3-2, 2-0) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. Smith also had nine digs and two assists. Chad Strickland had 15 kills and 12 digs, and setter Dan Nash tallied 56 assists.
