Stovall, Burgess Help Woodbridge Escape With One-Point Victory

Woodbridge, ranked third in the county, escaped a second consecutive upset by defeating El Toro, 49-48, featuring some last-second heroics from William Stovall and Chris Burgess in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game Friday at Woodbridge High.

Woodbridge lost to Corona del Mar on a last-second shot Wednesday, 55-53, but rebounded Friday.

Burgess, who scored 27 points, made a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to put Woodbridge ahead, 47-46. After El Toro’s Travis Senik made two free throws, Stovall made a layup with eight seconds remaining. Then Burgess then blocked Senik’s shot at the buzzer.

Woodbridge (21-6, 8-2 in league) shared the league title with Santa Margarita. El Toro is 12-14, 3-7.

In other league games:

Corona del Mar 46, Irvine 45 (OT)--With 16 seconds remaining in overtime, Brian Coleman’s basket put Corona del Mar (15-10, 6-4) up by one point. On Irvine’s final possession, Amir Rahimi drove to the basket, but Scott Shimer stole the ball and the Sea Kings clinched the victory and third place in league.

Coleman finished with 19 points for Corona del Mar. Rahimi scored 13 points for Irvine (11-15, 5-5).

Santa Margarita 56, Newport Harbor 31--Dennis Keane had 16 points for visiting Santa Margarita (18-6, 8-2), which tied Woodbridge for the league title.

In the Golden West League:

Servite 72, Ocean View 62--Dennis Wisco scored 18 points, making four of four three-pointers for Servite (13-2, 5-5), which forced a playoff with Ocean View (11-15, 5-5) at 3 p.m. today at Fountain Valley High, for the final automatic playoff berth.

Tustin 84, Saddleback 36--David Lalazarian scored 21 points for Tustin (23-3, 10-0), ranked second in the county.

Westminster 59, Santa Ana 54 (2 OT)--Geoff Henderson had 17 points and 12 rebounds for visiting Westminster (11-13, 6-4), which finished in the top three in league for the first time since 1970. Danny Rivero scored 22 points for Santa Ana (12-13, 4-6).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 89, Anza Hamilton 59--Corey Roberts had 13 points and 10 rebounds for league champ SCC (16-9, 9-1).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 54, Katella 45--Chad Boberg scored 28 points for league champion Cypress (22-4, 9-1).

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 74, Claremont 71--Jared Zielinski had 28 points and 14 rebounds for host Heritage Christian (16-8, 11-3).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 67, La Habra 53--Sean Granillo scored 30 points for host Sunny Hills (10-16, 3-7).

Troy 58, Buena Park 43--Buena Park (15-11, 5-5) will play at Fullerton (13-13, 5-5) at 10 a.m. today in a third-place playoff game.

Calvary Chapel 69, Cerritos Valley Christian 51--Nate Morton scored 17 points to lead Calvary Chapel (21-4, 10-0), which won its second consecutive league championship.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 68, Western 50--Sean Wink scored 15 points for league champion Brea (24-2, 10-0), ranked fifth in the county.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 55, Laguna Beach 44--Dane Plock scored 22 points for league champion Estancia, ranked fourth in Division III-A.

University 90, Aliso Niguel 83--Nathan Scoggin scored 28 points, including six three-pointers for University (11-14, 4-6). Mahdi Aslampour added 18 points and five three-pointers.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 68, Dana Hills 59--Dan Galvanoni scored 22 points for second-place Capistrano Valley (15-12, 6-4).

Mater Dei 64, Mission Viejo 52--Kevin Augustine had 16 points and eight assists for top-ranked Mater Dei (27-1, 10-0).

San Clemente 86, Trabuco Hills 68--Eli Engle scored 24 points for third-place San Clemente (15-11, 5-5). Nick Punto had 25 points and five three-pointers for Trabuco Hills (11-15, 3-7).

In Academy League girls’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 59, Liberty Christian 42--Shay Trette scored 22 points for St. Margaret’s (16-4, 10-0).
