Hot Chili Pepperdine Scorches Loyola, 75-65

Pepperdine made 60% of its field-goal attempts Saturday night and defeated Loyola Marymount, 75-65, in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game before 465 at Loyola’s Gersten Pavilion.

The Waves made eight of nine three-point shots on the way to their fourth conference victory in five games and complete a two-game sweep of the Lions this week.

Reserve center Jenny Frank scored 14 points for Pepperdine (13-11, 6-6 in conference play), which trailed at halftime, 36-35. Loyola dropped to 12-13, 3-9.

Center Lisa Siders added 13 points for Pepperdine, and guards Beatrice Godoy and Clare Walker each scored 12. Walker made all four of her three-point shots and Godoy was two for two.

Pepperdine, fourth in the WCC, closes regular-season conference play this week with games at San Francisco, which entered Saturday’s games in first place, and San Diego.

UC San Diego 90, Cal Lutheran 84--Evi Orologas had 25 points and eight rebounds but that wasn’t enough for the Regals (11-12) in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran.

Guard Nicole Albert added 17 points and had 11 assists for Cal Lutheran.

Marcia Jeffries scored 28 points and grabbed six rebounds for San Diego (18-6).

Canyons 89, Glendale 64--Kerri Garland scored 29 points and Melissa Dunkerley had 27 points for the Cougars (19-12, 7-3) in a Western State Conference game at Canyons.

Valley 66, Santa Monica 45--Shawanda Hotchkiss scored 26 points for Valley (25-9, 10-0) in a WSC South Division game at Valley.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 87, Victor Valley 79--Brian Burleson scored 21 points for the Marauders (24-6, 8-0) in a Foothill Conference North Division game.

BASEBALL

UCLA 7, Pepperdine 1--Eric Byrnes hit a three-run home run in the third inning of a nonconference game at Pepperdine.

The Waves (4-7) had only two hits and lost their fourth consecutive home game, their longest losing streak at home since 1989.

Dan Keller pitched a complete game for UCLA (8-4) and gave up a seventh-inning home run to Randy Wolf.

The Master’s 8, Cal Poly Pomona 6--A six-run fifth inning paced the Mustangs (3-6-1) in a nonconference game at Cal Poly Pomona.

Master’s trailed, 3-0, entering the fifth inning before Danny Cato’s double scored Dan Prentice and triggered the rally.

Oxnard 1, Glendale 0--Garrett Lee struck out seven for the Vaqueros (5-5-1), but the Condors scored an unearned run in the sixth inning in an Oxnard tournament game.

Glendale 3, El Camino 1--Freshman Jared Sandler pitched a six-hitter for the Vaqueros in the Oxnard tournament.

Jeff Deno had two hits and two runs batted in for Glendale.

Pierce 19, Moorpark 4--Casey Cote, who hit three doubles, had five hits and five RBIs, and Kirk Mayer had four hits and four RBIs for the Brahmas (7-3) in the Mt. San Antonio tournament championship game.

Cote was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Pierce 9, Moorpark 8--Jim Landress drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning for the Brahmas in a Mt. SAC semifinal. Mike Glendenning hit a three-run homer in the ninth.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 10-9, UC San Diego 0-0--Aimee Snider hit an inside-the-park, two-run home run in the second game of a nonconference rout at Cal Lutheran.

Heidi Stevens, who struck out five and pitched a two-hitter, also had a single, double and triple for the Regals (2-0).

In the first game, Kathy Proffitt had a no-hitter through five innings in her college debut.

Cal State Northridge 1-6, Long Beach State 2-1--Tara Glaister (3-1) struck out 10 and allowed seven hits for the visiting Matadors (6-2) in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader.

Scia Maumausolo hit a double, a home run and had two RBIs for the Matadors.

In the first game, Long Beach’s Amy Miner (2-0) lost her perfect game with two out in the seventh inning.
