Peninsula Takes Quick Lead, Upsets Esperanza
Jim Brewer scored 20 points and Phil Belin added 14 for Peninsula, which upset second-seeded Esperanza, 56-42, Friday night in a boys Division I-AA quarterfinal basketball game.
Peninsula (21-8) took an early lead, stretched it to 30-14 by halftime and coasted home against Esperanza (25-4) in the game at South Torrance High School.
Fontana 76, St. John Bosco 65--Corey Benjamin scored 20 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter with the Steelers (21-7) ahead by nine points, and they beat St. John Bosco, which got 18 points from Schea Cotton in a Division I-AA quarterfinal at Eisenhower High.
Fontana got 14 points apiece from Frank Nogura and Keith Bean.
Brian Johnson led Bosco with 23.
Mater Dei 50, Rowland 48--David Castleton hit a three-point basket to tie the score and Kevin Augustine stole the ball and made a layup with 10 seconds to play to win a Division I-A semifinal game for top-seeded Mater Dei at Ocean View High.
Glendora 77, Capistrano Valley 61--Josh Giles scored a game-high 36 points and Casey Jacobsen added 22 for Glendora (24-5) in a Division I-A quarterfinal victory at Cal Poly Pomona.
Moreno Valley 55, San Clemente 52--George Jimerson and Dennis Teel scored 15 points each for top-seeded Moreno Valley (25-4) in a II-AA semifinal victory over San Clemente (17-12).
Dominguez 98, Ventura 39--Jason Thomas scored 31 points and had eight rebounds for top-seeded Dominguez (28-2), which built a 48-17 halftime lead and breezed to a victory in a II-A quarterfinal game.
Artesia 79, Los Altos 63--Angel Santana had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Deandre Moore had 18 points and five steals for Artesia (24-5) in a II-A quarterfinal at Hacienda Heights Wilson High.
J.W. North 80, Woodbridge 66--Chris Claiborne scored 25 points to lead North to a Division II-AA quarterfinal victory over Woodbridge, which got 31 points from Chris Burgess.
Bishop Montgomery 58, Moorpark 41--Delano O’Oyen scored 20 points and Brandon Price had 16 for top-seeded Bishop Montgomery (24-3) in its III-AA victory at Peninsula High.
Harvard-Westlake 82, Duarte 56--Twins Jarron Collins and Jason Collins scored 17 points each to lead top-seeded Harvard-Westlake (25-2) to a III-A semifinal victory over Duarte.
Verbum Dei 68, Santa Clara 62--Deon Williams had a game-high 33 points and 15 assists and Phillip Blackmon had 14 points and 18 rebounds for Verbum Dei (17-10) in a IV-A semifinal at Dominguez High.
Pacific Hills 101, Redlands Calvary Chapel 48--Ivan Barahona had 32 points and seven assists for Pacific Hills (17-9) in a V-A quarterfinal at Murphy High.
Canoga Park 79, Huntington Park 59--Jaal Haqq scored 10 of Canoga Park’s 28 points in the fourth quarter to guide the Hunters (22-4) to a City Section Division 3-A victory at Cal State Los Angeles.
