SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Perhaps the Moorpark High boys’ basketball team was waiting for overtime.

The Musketeers had won each of their last two playoff games in overtime, but they never got that far Friday night. Moorpark fell to Bishop Montgomery, 58-41, in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs at Peninsula High.

The Knights (24-3) answered three Moorpark runs with bigger ones, including an 11-0 streak to end the game after the Musketeers (19-11) closed to within 47-41 on a Keith Donahue layup midway through the fourth quarter.

The Musketeers used an 11-2 run to take an 11-8 lead, but the Knights closed the first quarter on a 10-2 surge.

“That’s the sign of a good team,” Moorpark Coach Tim Bednar said of the top-seeded Knights. “They answered everything we did.”

Moorpark, which trailed at halftime, 31-24, didn’t get closer than six points thereafter.

The Musketeers played most of the second half without point guard Brian Donahue, who fell to the floor in the third quarter with blood gushing from above his right eye.

“Losing Brian really hurt us,” Bednar said. “He is the one who makes us go. He understands the offense.”

Patrick Tate scored 13 points for Moorpark. Brian Donahue had eight points and five assists, and Keith Donahue and Kalani Ferreria each added seven points.

Knight guard Delano D’Oyen had 20 points and eight assists.
