San Fernando’s Sandoval Hurls No-Hitter

Senior Julio Sandoval threw a no-hitter Friday, lifting the San Fernando High baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Palmdale in a San Fernando Valley tournament game at San Fernando High.

Sandoval went the distance, striking out five. San Fernando Coach Dan Heim said he believes it is the first no-hitter by a San Fernando player in at least 20 years. Adrian Rizo had a two-run single in the first inning and Chris Montano had a run-scoring triple in the third for the Tigers (1-0).

In other pool play games of the San Fernando tournament:

Monroe 8, Westlake 7--Paul Saario drove in Joe Nocera with the winning run in the sixth after Monroe (1-0) trailed, 7-2, to Westlake (0-1) at Monroe.

Agoura 13, Van Nuys 7--Manny Mosqueda was three for four with two doubles, five runs batted in and scored three runs for the Chargers (1-0) at Agoura.

Ryan McCann added three doubles and three RBIs for Agoura.

South Gate 7, Birmingham 5--Henry Salas had three hits, three stolen bases and two RBIs for the Braves (1-1) at Birmingham.

South Gate (1-1) scored seven unearned runs and took advantage of seven Birmingham errors.

El Camino Real 15, Thousand Oaks 0--Shaun Fishman pitched a complete game and struck out eight for the Conquistadores (2-0) at Thousand Oaks.

Fishman also had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Craig Hennes added a double, a triple and two RBIs.

Cleveland 13, Grant 2--Kelvin Delgado had two doubles and scored four runs for the Cavaliers (2-0) at Grant.

Cleveland’s Casey Roth scored twice and drove in four runs. Grant (0-2) took advantage of two throwing errors in the sixth inning to score its runs.

In pool play games of the Westside tournament:

Alemany 6, Crossroads 4--Kenny Ordona hit a three-run home run in the sixth and had four RBIs for the Indians at Crossroads.

Adrian Pantoja allowed one hit and struck out three in four innings for Alemany (1-0).

Hart 14, Hueneme 2--Cody Joyce had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for the Indians (1-0) at Hueneme.

Chatsworth 7, St. Monica 1--The Chancellors (1-0) broke open a 1-1 tie with six runs in the seventh inning at St. Monica.

Joe Tillman broke the deadlock with a two-run single, and a fielding error on the play brought in another run.

Chatsworth’s Greg Wold (1-0) added a double to drive in the final three runs. He also pitched a two-hitter, striking out six.

Loyola 10, Taft 2--The Toreadors (0-1) committed three errors and allowed seven unearned runs at Loyola. Yaron Peters had two hits for Taft.

Camarillo 13, Rio Mesa 5--Tom Trejo and Jeff Bannon each had three hits as the Scorpions (1-0) won at Rio Mesa.

Nathan Kaup had two hits and two runs scored before leaving the game in the second inning after being involved in a collision at home plate. Kaup, who has signed a letter of intent with Oklahoma State, was not seriously injured.

Buena 13, Harvard-Westlake 0--Rick Helland cruised to a complete game, striking out three, and added a grand slam as the Bulldogs (1-0) routed the Wolverines (0-1) at Van Nuys.

Sylmar 7, Saugus 3--A four-run seventh inning lifted the Spartans (1-0) at Sylmar. Chris Ruley singled to score Albert Palma with the winning run.

Mike Flores had two hits for Sylmar. Ralph Velazco (1-0) went the distance, allowing three hits and three unearned runs while striking out five and walking one.

Hawthorne 6, Notre Dame 5--Jorge Piedra had three hits, stole a base and scored two runs but the Knights (0-1) fell at Notre Dame.

Adam Boyd had three hits and scored twice for the Knights.

In first-round El Segundo tournament games:

Royal 16, Long Beach Jordan 1--Left-hander Adrian Mendoza and Matt Rainer combined on a one-hitter at Long Beach Jordan. Mendoza allowed one single and struck out eight in four innings, and Rainer struck out four in the final three innings.

Ryan Nielsen had two doubles and a triple and droving in four runs for the Highlanders (1-0). Mendoza had three hits.

Crespi 12, South Torrance 1--Jon Cuccias tossed a three-hitter, striking out seven, and Chris Crawley had two hits, including a triple, for the Celts (1-0) at Valley College.

John Campanella had a double and three runs batted in, and his brother Andy added two hits, including a triple.

Burroughs 5, Simi Valley 5--The Indians (1-0) won in a tiebreaker because they had more total bases.

Simi Valley junior John Whipp hit a three-run home run in his first at-bat.

Wes Hutchinson picked up the win for Burroughs.

In nonleague games:

St. Bonaventure 23, Salesian 3--Danny Harrison had four hits and eight RBIs as the Seraphs (1-0) pounded Salesian at St. Bonaventure. Donny Harrison, Danny’s twin brother, added four hits and two RBIs and scored four runs.

Fillmore 4, Village Christian 2--Tim McLain hit a two-run home run and Danny Ibarra added a run-scoring single in the sixth as the Flashes (1-0) erased a 2-1 deficit at Fillmore.

Tim Pina had two hits for Fillmore and Jose Becerra (1-0) relieved Chris Goodenough and struck out five in two innings.

L.A. Baptist 10, La Canada 5--John Wilson had two hits, drove in two runs and scored three as the Knights (1-0) beat the Spartans (0-1) at L.A. Baptist.

The Knights’ Ed Jung added two hits and three RBIs. Seth Barkley had two hits and two RBIs.

Moorpark 6, Monrovia 5--Shane Coffey had three hits and Justin Ames struck out 10 for Moorpark (1-0) in the first round of the Duarte tournament.

SOFTBALL

Granada Hills 4, Valencia 1--Viking sophomore April Markham took a 1-0 lead into the seventh, but three wild pitches and three errors led to four unearned runs and a Highlander victory in a nonleague opener at Valencia. Markham settled for a three-hitter, striking out 10, and drove in the Viking run with a single.

Jennifer Harling had three of Valencia’s six hits off Jessica Creith, who struck out nine.

Alemany 3, Sylmar 2--Kim Deiner’s sacrifice fly scored Genn Woodward with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh of a nonleague opener at Alemany.

Deiner tossed a two-hitter, striking out seven, and Gloria Dominguez and Annette Ramirez each added two hits.

Burroughs 3, Monrovia 1--Jennifer Tyler threw a one-hitter, struck out 10 and walked two for the host Indians in the nonleague opener at Burroughs.

Santa Clara 5, St. Bonaventure 1--Anica Montes had a triple and two RBIs and Niecee Madrigal had two hits for Santa Clara in a nonleague opener at Santa Clara.

Buckley 18, Viewpoint 5--Tiffany Alexander struck out five and walked four as Buckley opened with a nonleague victory.
