Dana Hills Seeking Orloff to Replace Deneke

Scott Orloff, who coached Santa Ana Valley last season to its first league football title in 18 years, has been offered the football coaching job at Dana Hills.

Orloff’s hiring is pending approval by the Capistrano Valley Unified School District board of directors. He would replace Trace Deneke, who resigned after two seasons to became an assistant at Rancho Buena Vista High in Vista.

Dana Hills was 2-8 last season.

Orloff was 16-16 in three seasons at Santa Ana Valley. The Falcons were 8-4 and Century League co-champions in 1995 and reached the Southern Section playoffs for the first time in 17 years. Santa Ana Valley lost to Servite, 26-6, in the quarterfinals of the Division V playoffs.

Mater Dei’s Melody Peterson was named Friday by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn. to the 1996 Nike/WBCA girls’ high school All-America team.

Peterson, a 5-foot-10 senior guard who will play at Stanford in the fall, was one of 20 players named. She’s averaging 17.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

She was the Times Orange County player of the year in 1995.

John McMahon, a center on the El Dorado football team, will play for Dartmouth this fall after accepting an academic grant. McMahon was a first-team All-Empire League selection last season.

The Irvine Track and Field Invitational has been moved from March 9 to April 6. Resurfacing of the track at Irvine High has been delayed by the rains, Athletic Director Rick Curtis said.
