La Canada (25-0) extended its section records for consecutive victories (50) and goals scored in a season (145).

“I don’t think there was a better player on the field today than Gaston,” said La Canada Coach Lou Bilowitz, who has won three section titles in a nine-year tenure.

Thirteen of the Spartans’ 18 players are seniors and seven of them, including Haupert, have signed to play NCAA Division I soccer next season.

GIRLS

Kim Pickup and Jackie Fodor scored two goals each, leading Chatsworth High to a 6-0 victory over San Pedro in the girls’ City 4-A soccer championship at East L.A. College.

Chatsworth (19-0-1) won its sixth City soccer title in eight years. San Pedro finished 15-7-1.

“This is by far the best team we’ve ever had,” Chatsworth Coach Jack Sidwell said after the Chancellors had outscored their three playoff opponents, 25-0. “They’re very talented and unselfish and willing to do whatever it takes to win.”

The Chancellors scored three first-half goals, the first coming when Pickup, who performs a front-flip for power before every throw-in, directed a sideline toss past San Pedro goalie Mia Ciketic.

“I’ve been doing that flip since I was 10,” Pickup said. “It’s a great way to get more distance on the throw. This is the first time I’ve ever scored on it in a high school game though.”

Fodor, a freshman, scored from 10 yards out and Michelle George added a breakaway goal for a 3-0 lead.

Pickup, Fodor and Corinne Briers added breakaway goals in the second half.
