BOYS’ DIVISION I

Los Angeles Fremont (27-4) vs. Mater Dei (33-1), Bren Center, 7:30 p.m.

It has been rough for Fremont lately. The top-ranked team in the Los Angeles City Section was upset by L.A. Crenshaw, 82-81, in the city 4-A championship Saturday at the Sports Arena. In the opening regional round Tuesday, the Pathfinders had to claw back to win, 49-44, avoiding an upset by Del Mar Torrey Pines and its four-corner offense. Mater Dei, the Southern Section Division I-A champion, isn’t about to go into a stall, but don’t look for the Monarchs to get into a running game with Fremont either. They’re more likely to exploit the Pathfinders’ defense and try to control the tempo if they get a lead. A big plus, too, for Mater Dei is the game site, the Monarchs’ home court. Fremont’s guards, Eian Daniel, Donnie Wilcher, Danny Walker and Korrey Taylor, take turns being heroes. Daniels made seven three-pointers and scored 31 points in a city quarterfinal victory over Washington. Wilcher followed with a game-high 19 points in the semifinals against Westchester. Walker, who had 19 points, and Taylor had Crenshaw on the ropes in the title game until the final seconds. Mater Dei has received good production from center Mike Vukovich, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds in Tuesday’s 85-77 victory over Victorville Victor Valley.
