Weekend TV : Basketball Teams, Newsmagazines Go to Battle

Share

One thing is certain about this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament: UCLA won’t be defending its championship title. The Bruins were upset in the first round Thursday night by Princeton, 43-41. But while the Bruins’ hoop dreams have vanished for this season, there will be plenty of tournament action this weekend on CBS Channel 2.

Today’s games feature Massachusetts vs. Stanford at 9 a.m.; Marquette vs. Arkansas at 11:30 a.m.; Kentucky vs. Virginia Tech at 1:30 p.m.; and Princeton vs. Mississippi State at 4 p.m. CBS will also air games Sunday at 9 and 11:30 a.m. and at 1:45 p.m.

The battle of the network newsmagazines kicks off Sunday at 7 p.m. when NBC pits its popular “Dateline,” which already airs in three other prime-time slots, against CBS’ venerable “60 Minutes.” The premiere edition of “Dateline Sunday” features an interview with Olympic skater Ekaterine Gordeeva and a report on emergency rooms, on Channels 4 and 36. “60 Minutes,” which will soon be resurrecting its “Point Counterpoint” feature of the ‘70s, counters with a profile of former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and a look at the underground marijuana-growing industry.
