After leading their teams to the City Section 3-A Division basketball final, Carloes Harper of Canoga Park High and Onaje Longmire of Van Nuys have been chosen co-players of the year in the division by a panel of sportswriters.

Harper and Longmire also had been selected the players of the year in the Mid-Valley League and their teams shared the league title. For Longmire, a 6-foot-4 senior forward who averaged 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds, sharing another award with Harper left him ambivalent.

“At first I was upset, because we won the championship,” he said. “But then I thought about it a while and thought Carloes probably had a better season than me.”

Although Van Nuys edged Canoga Park, 70-65, in double overtime in the title game, it is difficult to separate the players’ individual accomplishments.

Harper, a 6-3 junior forward, averaged 23.6 points and 11.5 rebounds, and his average of 3.2 blocked shots led the region among players from large schools.

Four other players from the region were selected to the 3-A team: Maurice Potter of Verdugo Hills, Cameron Henderson of El Camino Real, Anthony Ellison of Canoga Park and Jon Okui of Van Nuys.

Jerome Joseph of Chatsworth and Junior Brignac of Cleveland were selected All-City in the 4-A Division.

On the girls’ team, Taft’s Monia Calhoun and Vanessa Dunn, and North Hollywood’s Samantha Fargeon were named to the 4-A team.

Selected to the 3-A team were Nancy Vincent and Tynitra Wilson of Chatsworth, and Grant’s Bahaneh Maani.
