Newport Harbor Upsets No. 6 Irvine in Volleyball

Unranked Newport Harbor defeated Irvine, ranked sixth in Orange County, 15-9, 15-10, 14-16, 15-8, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Friday at Irvine.

Wes Badorek had 14 kills for the Sailors (3-4, 2-0 in league). Amir Rahimi had 16 kills for Irvine (4-4, 0-2).

In another Sea View League match:

Corona del Mar 3, El Toro 0--John Coon had 16 kills and Derek Newcomer 44 assists for Corona del Mar (3-3, 1-1), which upset ninth-ranked El Toro, 15-12, 15-9, 15-7.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 3, Ocean View 0--Brandon Dove had 24 kills for host Tustin (6-3, 3-0), which won, 10-15, 15-13, 15-7, 15-9.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 3, University 0--Vlade Andric had 27 kills for Laguna Beach, which won 15-6, 15-8, 15-7.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, San Clemente 1--Brad Leach had 20 kills and Beau Rawi had 18 for top-ranked Capistrano Valley (7-0, 2-0), which defeated fifth-ranked San Clemente, 15-7, 12-15, 9-15, 15-7, 15-6.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Fountain Valley 0--Kai Parker had 12 kills for host Edison which won, 15-12, 15-2, 15-11.

Huntington Beach 3, Marina 1--Dave McKenzie had 17 kills and Evan Hook 16 for third-ranked Huntington Beach (7-1, 1-1), which defeated No. 7 Marina, 14-16, 15-8, 15-7, 15-6.

In South Coast League golf:

Trabuco Hills 207, San Clemente 212--Nick Petralia recorded two birdies, shooting a one-over par 37 at Coto de Caza for Trabuco Hills (10-0, 5-0). San Clemente is 10-2, 3-1.

In a nonleague match:

St. Margaret’s 244, Calvary Chapel 307--Freshman Jimmy Freeman had two birdies and needed only 11 putts to shoot even-par 35 at Marbella for St. Margaret’s.

In Express League softball:

Heritage Christian 19, Harbor City Gateway Christian 11--Heritage Christian (1-3, 1-1) scored 12 runs in the first inning and went on to its first victory in two years.

In the Canyon tournament:

El Dorado 6, Western 0--Samantha Kimura had a home run and three RBIs and Melissa Hobson pitched a two-hitter for El Dorado (8-3).

In nonleague games:

Huntington Beach 6, Saddleback 0--Jessica Walker (3-2) tossed a one-hitter, striking out seven, for eighth-ranked Huntington Beach (8-5).

Laguna Beach 5, St. Margaret’s 4 (11)--Jessica Brinkman homered with two outs in the 11th inning for Laguna Beach.

Newport Harbor 12, Costa Mesa 1 (5, mercy)--Junior Molli Mullen had a grand slam for Newport Harbor (7-4).

In South Coast League boys’ tennis:

Dana Hills 11, Mission Viejo 7--Third-ranked Dana Hills won six of nine doubles sets from No. 8 Mission Viejo, including a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 sweep by Mike Rosenbluth and Florian Glattes. Brandon Fallon swept at singles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, for the Dolphins (9-0, 2-0).

In a nonleague match:

Corona del Mar 14, Carpenteria Cate 4--Top-ranked Corona del Mar (6-1) was led by Taylor Dent who swept 6-2, 6-4, 6-0.
