Garcia Starts Things Off Right for Quartz Hill in 2-1 Victory

Pitcher Bryan Garcia is normally Quartz Hill High’s closer, but Friday he was the Rebels’ ace.

Garcia, subbing for injured Mark Madsen, threw a one-hitter and hit a home run to lift Quartz Hill (7-3) to a 2-1 victory over Antelope Valley in a Golden League opener at Quartz Hill.

Garcia (1-0, four saves) faced just two batters over the minimum in his first start of the season. Larry Phillips singled in the winning run in the fourth.

Sean Douglass allowed four hits and struck out nine for Antelope Valley (6-5).

Highland 3, Palmdale 0--Dan O’Haver pitched his first complete game for the visiting Bulldogs (4-7) in a Golden League opener. He pitched a four-hitter with one strikeout and no walks.

Joe Maier hit a two-run home run in the sixth for Highland, and Eddie Tovar added two hits, including a run-scoring triple.

Westlake 2, Simi Valley 1--Scott Dragicevich hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie for the Warriors (5-5, 2-2) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Dragicevich also had a double and single, and Kevin Howard homered to account for Westlake’s other run.

Jay Kenny (3-1) pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Newbury Park 9, Agoura 7--Brian Turville singled in Chris Czernek in the seventh to ice the victory for the Panthers (5-5, 2-3) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. Teammate Jake Farrel was four for four and had two runs batted in.

Calabasas 7, Nordhoff 0--Josh Goldfield and Adam Davey each hit three-run home runs for the Coyotes (6-1-2, 4-0-1) in a Frontier League game at Calabasas. Tanner Trosper (3-1) allowed two hits in five innings.

Santa Paula 10, Santa Clara 1--Carlos Torres pitched a seven-hitter and struck out five in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula (7-0, 4-0). Daniel Forhan homered and hit a three-run double.

Moorpark 4, Malibu 1--Richie Cartier had two hits and three RBIs for the host Musketeers (5-4, 3-2) in a Frontier League game. Moorpark’s Kevin McMullin pitched his third complete game, striking out five and walking one.

Hart 6, Burbank 2--Matt McAfee had two hits and drove in four runs for the visiting Indians (9-3, 5-0) in a Foothill League game. McAfee hit a three-run home run in the third.

Bobby Graves pitched a four-hitter for the Indians, striking out seven and walking five.

Saugus 6, Canyon 1--Derek Lyons allowed three hits in five innings for the Centurions (7-5, 3-2) in a Foothill League game at Saugus. Jeff Hammond had two hits and an RBI, and Nathan Pellegrin had two hits and scored twice for Saugus.

Glendale 12, Muir 1--Mark Hutchinson had three hits and three RBIs, and Phil Onsaga hit two doubles and drove in two runs for the Dynamiters (6-1, 4-1) in a Pacific League game at Glendale.

Bryan Chan (2-1) gave up five hits, struck out three and did not allow a walk in six innings.

Glendale (6-1, 4-1) played an errorless game for the first time this season.

Crescenta Valley 8, Hoover 1--Brian Bishop pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking one for the visiting Falcons (5-5, 3-2) in a Pacific League game.

Jesse Mitchell had four hits for Crescenta Valley, driving in two runs and scoring twice, and Kevin Enright added two hits, including a two-run double. Mark Hull hit a home run for Hoover (5-5, 2-3).

Oak Park 4, Montclair Prep 1--Nick Cunico had two hits, including a home run, and Jeff Smith tripled for the Eagles (7-3) in a nonleague game at Oak Park. Jeff Roberts allowed four hits over five innings, striking out three and walking four.

Sylmar 10, Reseda 2--The Spartans scored seven unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda. Albert Palma had three hits and drove in four runs for Sylmar (8-2, 6-0). He is five for six with seven RBIs in the past two games.

The Spartans also got three hits from winning pitcher Ralph Velazco (4-0).

SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks 2, Royal 0--Junior left-hander Jennifer Sharron (5-2) threw her fourth no-hitter of the season and struck out 12 in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Erika Hanson had two hits and an RBI and Justine Rachlin had a hit, an RBI and one run scored for Thousand Oaks (6-2, 2-2).

Simi Valley 1, Agoura 0--Lori Tande hit a sacrifice fly to score Cara DeStefano and end a 13-inning Marmonte League game at Simi Valley. Tande also struck out six in four innings and allowed two hits.

Rio Mesa 1, Ventura 0--Marcella Ramirez (6-1) threw a one-hitter, struck out six and walked two for the Spartans (8-1, 4-1) in a Channel League game at Ventura. Carol Saldana singled and scored on Laura Moreno’s two-out triple in the first.

Calabasas 11, Nordhoff 0--Cara Blumfield and Kelly Cheever each drove in two runs, and pitcher Christy Culver recorded her first shutout for the Coyotes in a Frontier League game in Ojai.

Moorpark 2, Malibu 0--Lisa Estill singled home Tricia Morgan and Tracey Milburn with two out in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie for the Musketeers (5-4, 5-1) in a Frontier League game at Malibu. Erin Heinbechner (5-2) pitched her second shutout this week.

Oak Park 5, Fillmore 4--Julie Jensen scored Kelly Weaver on a groundout in the seventh for the Eagles (5-7, 1-0) after Fillmore had tied the score in the sixth in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

Kaylene Boldroff (4-3) gave up five hits and eight walks and struck out eight for the Eagles.

Buena 5, Santa Barbara 0--Erin Kelly threw a four-hitter for the Bulldogs (4-6, 2-3) in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara. Amber Carr had two hits for Buena.

Louisville 1, Notre Dame 0--Liz Hudson drove in Becky Witt with a single in the first for the Royals (5-4, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Louisville. Stefanie Urman (5-4) threw a three-hitter and struck out five for the Royals.

Tricia Wetzel gave up four hits and struck out six for the Knights (4-3, 1-1).

Hoover 9, Burbank 1--Tina Kinney pitched five no-hit innings for the Tornadoes (7-4) in a nonleague game.

Poly 3, Sylmar 1--Mary Casillas (2-2) threw a one-hitter and Marvel Velasco had two hits and two RBIs for the Parrots (4-4, 1-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Velasco had two hits and two RBIs for Poly.

El Camino Real 23, Cleveland 0--Ashley Redlin and Kristi Nicklaus combined for a no-hitter for the Conquistadores (8-3, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Redlin struck out five and walked two in five innings, and Nicklaus finished the game with one strikeout and no walks.

Ramona Shelburne had four hits and seven RBIs for El Camino Real, and Kristin Gutekunst added three hits and six RBIs, including a grand slam in the first.

BOYS’ TRACK

Birmingham 76 1/2, Kennedy 50 1/2--Maurice Threewitts won the 220-yard dash in 22.6 seconds, the 440 in 52.1 and ran the second leg on the victorious 440 relay team (44.3) to help the visiting Braves (4-0, 4-0) to their 68th consecutive dual-meet victory in a Northwest Valley Conference contest.

El Camino Real 118, Cleveland 9--Roderick Crowe and Quincy Wright each won two events for the Conquistadores (4-0, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet.

Crowe ran a personal best of 50.2 in the 400 meters and leaped 43 feet 1 inch in the triple jump. Wright timed 11.2 in the 100 and 23.5 in the 200.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Taft 66, Granada Hills 60--Sophomores Eboni Grayson and Francis Santin paced the Toreadors (4-0, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet.

Grayson won the 100 in 12.5, the 200 in 26.1 and the long jump at 14-11. Santin placed first in the 100 high hurdles (16.0) and 300 lows (46.7). They also ran the first two legs on the victorious 400 relay team that clocked 50.9.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Santa Barbara 14, Rio Mesa 4--Rio Mesa was hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Dons (11-0, 8-0), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section, but was short-handed because singles player Bob Bryan missed the Channel League match. Bryan was out because of the flu while his twin, Mike, swept three sets for three of the Spartans’ four points. The Bryans are members of the U.S. Junior National team and play in only key matches for Rio Mesa (9-2, 6-2).

Mike Bryan posted a 6-0 victory over Adam Webster, who is currently considered the No. 1 singles player in the 18-and-under division in Southern California.

Westlake 9, Agoura 9 (Westlake, 82-69, in games)--Darren Joe helped the rebuilding Warriors surprise first-place Agoura by dominating at No. 1 singles in the Marmonte League match at Westlake. When the match came down to the tiebreaker, Joe’s 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1 victories over Dillon Ruby, Dan Charoenrath and Bryan Leiker made the difference. Joe earned 18 tiebreaker points for Westlake (6-4, 4-3) while yielding only three. The Chargers are 7-2, 6-1.

Notre Dame 15, St. Francis 3--Singles players Bret Williams and Jason Rudolph and the No. 2 doubles team of Joe Sison and Andrew Pogany swept their opponents for the Knights in a Mission League match at Fremont Park.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar d. Van Nuys, 12-15, 15-11, 14-16, 16-14, 15-10--Kevin Dawes had 28 kills, six blocks, 10 digs and four aces for the Spartans (7-0, 4-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar. Teammate Art Salcedo had 60 assists and 30 digs. Eugene Kwong had 22 kills and nine blocks for the Wolves (3-4, 3-1).

Canoga Park d. North Hollywood, 16-14, 10-15, 16-14, 5-15, 15-4--Mike Scarborough had 16 kills and 15 blocks and Ray Obispo and Ron Salamanca each had 16 digs as the Hunters (6-1, 3-1) won a three-hour Valley Pac-8 Conference match at North Hollywood.

For North Hollywood (4-3, 2-2), Jason Fisher had 20 kills and 13 blocks.

Notre Dame d. St. Francis, 15-13, 15-13, 14-16, 15-2--Bro Richmond had a career-high 30 kills and Jeff McDonald added 10 kills for Notre Dame (4-6, 2-4) in a Mission League match at St. Francis.
