Simi Valley Knocks Off Camarillo, 1-0
Corinne Long doubled to score Lori Tande with two out in the top of the seventh inning and Simi Valley High held on to upset host Camarillo, 1-0, Tuesday in a Marmonte League game.
The Pioneers’ triumph knocked the Scorpions (7-1-1, 3-1-1 in league play) from the top spot in The Times’ regional poll. Simi Valley (6-3, 4-1) is ranked No. 6.
Tande (4-3) threw a one-hitter, striking out eight and walking two--one intentionally. Camarillo pitcher Melanie Richardson (3-1) allowed six hits while striking out 12 and walking three.
In the seventh, Tande led off with a walk and stole second after the next two Simi Valley batters struck out. Long followed with a double, a shot over the left fielder’s head.
“We were getting hits so I had a feeling we’d come through with a run, but we stranded so many runners I wasn’t sure,” said Pioneers’ Coach Suzanne Manlet. Simi Valley left 10 runners on base, including three at third.
Simi Valley freshman right fielder Tracie Hall ensured the victory with a tumbling catch of a long foul ball for the final out of the game.
