Hayes Resigns Basketball Post at Canyon

Greg Hayes, boys’ varsity basketball coach at Canyon High for 14 seasons, resigned Wednesday.

Hayes said he will continue to teach at Canyon and work at various summer basketball camps. Earlier this year, he resigned as Canyon’s softball coach, saying he wanted to devote more time to his family.

That wasn’t the case in this decision, he said.

“My wife [would have been] very supportive of my decision either way,” Hayes said. “I have been here for 14 years and it is time to pursue some other professional avenues.

“It feels good to move on with positive memories of my coaching experience.”

Hayes had a record of 180-160 at Canyon. The Cowboys were 7-33 his first two seasons but 173-127 in his past 12. His teams won Golden League titles in 1986 and ’87 and posted 20 victories in 1994 and 1990, the year Canyon reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Canyon has finished second in the Foothill League in each of the past three seasons, reaching the second round of the playoffs each time.

When the Gulf War broke out during the 1990-91 season, Hayes was inspired to give each player equal playing time, saying the basketball season had lost some of its importance.
