Stevens Cleans Up as Cal Lutheran Sweeps to SCIAC Title, 3-0 and 10-2

Heidi Stevens had three hits, including her conference-leading eighth home run, as Cal Lutheran clinched the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball championship by defeating Whittier, 3-0 and 10-2, in a doubleheader Saturday.

Stevens (12-1) pitched a five-hitter in the title-clinching victory for the Regals (26-1, 20-0 in conference play) and struck out nine.

Tracy Little had four hits, including a triple, drove in three runs and scored two.

CS Northridge 1-8, Southern Utah 0-0--Tara Glaister and Jennifer Richardson pitched no-hitters for the Matadors in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cedar City, Utah.

Richardson (17-5) struck out 14 and walked none in the second game. One Thunderbird runner reached base on an error.

In the first game, Glaister struck out eight and walked four for Cal State Northridge (30-9, 10-3).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Valley 8, Mission 3--Nathan Wrought had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, and Steve Zorn added two hits, including a double, and had two RBIs for the Monarchs (11-22, 7-10) in a Western State Conference game at Mission.

Jaime Cerna had two doubles for the Free Spirit (12-21, 4-12).

Ventura 6, Santa Barbara 5--Chris Carr’s single scored pinch-runner Jake Brown with the game-winning run with two out in the ninth inning for the Pirates (15-16, 8-9) in a WSC game.

The Vaqueros (9-23, 5-12) scored three in the seventh inning to erase a 5-2 deficit.

Dustin Tubb (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief and Jeremy Pierce retired the final two batters to get a save.

Canyons 7, Glendale 6--Justin Bunch hit a one-out double in the top of the 11th inning to score Casey Canale, capping a seven-run comeback for the Cougars (18-15, 13-4) in a WSC game at Glendale.

Nate Celusta pitched seven scoreless innings after allowing six runs in the first--five unearned. Brian Baker (2-1) pitched three innings of shutout relief.

Oxnard 13, Moorpark 1--Jake Spar highlighted an eight-run second inning with a bases-loaded, two-out double in a WSC game at Oxnard (24-6, 25-2).

Raudel Flores had two hits and three RBIs for Oxnard.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Crespi 10-4, St. Bernard 0-6--Mike Turner hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the first game of a nonleague doubleheader.

Cory Neill had two hits and three RBIs in the second game for the Celts (13-5), whose 10-game winning streak came to an end.
