No Joke: Kingsmen Score 60 Runs in Doubleheader

Cal Lutheran enjoyed a record-setting day Saturday with a lopsided sweep of Caltech in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

The Kingsmen (25-7-1, 17-1 in conference play) won the first game, 21-1, then set school records for runs and doubles in a game with a 39-4 victory in the second game.

Rick Holmes was four for four, including a double, and drove in five runs in the first game. Chad Bourgeois had two doubles and Mitch Brim had one. Mike Melocci hit a three-run home run to pace a 14-hit attack.

In the second game, David Jaglowski added to the spectacle by becoming the first player in Cal Lutheran history to play all nine positions in one game. Jaglowski had two hits and a triple and also pitched the ninth inning.

Cal Lutheran had five home runs in the second game, including a grand slam by Donny Churchman and one inside the park by Adam Rauch, who had three hits. Brad Larson and Matt Moore hit back-to-back home runs.

Portland 3, Pepperdine 2--Josh Oder had two hits for the Waves (25-16, 14-3) in a West Coast Conference game at Portland (10-24, 1-12).

Mission 6, Bakersfield 5--Amador Solis had two hits and scored the decisive run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning in a Western State Conference game at Mission.

Solis reached base on a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a single.

Hiram Damwijk and Solis hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning for Mission (13-22, 5-15). It was the first home run of the season for Damwijk and the fifth for Solis (2-2), who picked up the victory in relief. Damwijk finished with three hits and two runs batted in.

Bakersfield (22-13, 11-9) tied the score, 5-5, in the ninth. .

Oxnard 6, Santa Barbara 2--Brian Downing struck out five and walked three in his first complete game of the season in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.

Downing (7-0), a sophomore left-hander, gave up eight hits.

Jeff Olivares and Raudel Flores each had three hits and Olivares drove in two runs for Oxnard (26-6, 17-2).

Moorpark 15, Hancock 6--Five players hit home runs for the Raiders in a WSC game at Hancock.

Moorpark (11-19, 6-11), which had 22 hits, got home runs from Scott Miller, Steve Klein, Richard Hernandez, Cliff Rhea and Charlie Boch.

Klein finished with five hits and Rhea had four. Boch had three hits and Hernandez two.

Ventura 7, Cuesta 6--Jeff Chan hit a two-run triple and then scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning in a WSC game at Ventura.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge swept a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against New Mexico, 4-3 and 12-6, at New Mexico.

The Matadors (33-10, 13-4 in WAC play), ranked fifth in the nation, had 21 hits in the second game, including a home run and two doubles by Chelo Lopez.

In the first game, New Mexico (15-25, 2-16) led, 3-2, but the Matadors scored twice in the seventh.
