Determined Edison Wins the Girls’ Meet

The Edison girls’ team had a goal in mind at the Orange County Track and Field Championships, and almost accomplished it uncontested.

The Chargers set the tone in Saturday’s first final, the 100-meter hurdles, when Kerry O’Bric finished second and teammate Katy Zimmon placed third.

“What a tremendous team effort,” Charger Coach Karen O’Bric said. “This is the first year that we’ve set this title as a goal for the team.”

O’Bric scored 26 of the 78 1/2 points posted by the Chargers, who won the team title, the first for the school.

In the hurdles, O’Bric, a senior, grabbed second with her time of 15.25. Ashley Bethel of Mission Viejo won the event in 14.21. Then O’Bric won the long jump with a meet record of 19 feet 3 1/2 inches and placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 39-8.

Both jumps were personal bests for O’Bric, who will attend Baylor in the fall. Esperanza standout Kelly O’Connor won the triple jump with her leap of 39-9 3/4.

Senior Kelly Marshall also scored points in three individual events, finishing in a tie for sixth in the 100 (12.91), second in the 200 (26.20) and fourth in the 400 (59.52). The Charger standout also anchored the first-place 1,600-meter relay team, which finished in 4:01.0, the fastest in the county this spring.

Marie Philman and Karen Anderson also scored points for the Chargers. Philman took second in the shotput (39-5 3/4) and discus (135-10) and Anderson was second in the 400 (58.57) and ran third leg on the winning 1,600 relay.

“The maturity of the four big seniors has finally come to the forefront. They have finally arrived,” said Karen O’Bric, referring to Kerry O’Bric, Marshall, Philman and Anderson.

Foothill junior Erica Hoernig won the girls’ pole vault, raising the county record by three inches. Hoernig jumped 10-9, besting the county standard set by Marina sophomore Katie Rorem a week ago.

Woodbridge standout Heaven Yoshino won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a county-best time of 45.12. Yoshino, a senior, also led off the Warriors’ 400 relay (49.34), which came in first, giving Woodbridge a a third-place finish (46 1/2 points) behind Edison and Mission Viejo (53) in the team competition.

Fountain Valley senior Angie Winkler won the 3,000 in 10:21.59 and Maribel Delgado of Santa Ana Valley won the 1,500 (4:46.18).
